You go Canada!!!

Discussion in 'News and Current Events' started by LastOneStanding, Mar 25, 2011.

  1. Can't forget about Ohio in 2004. In my state, I've long since given up on getting someone whose views I share elected. Instead, I focus on trying to elect someone who won't be too much of a fuckup. Those lucky Canadian bastards still have hope. Must be nice.

  2. yesh.. the lesser of two evils. that is a game that people like you and me and probably the rest of the collective have learned to play very well.

  3. I find elections go much better if I get blinding drunk after I cast my ballot. The headache I experience afterwards is nothing compared to the headache I can expect the following four years.

Ok here I go out on a limb, and chop it off if you choose, but life is all about "The Lesser of Evils."

Nearly Every choice each of us makes is choosing the better of the bad. How often do we actually get to choose what we actually want? Rarely, if ever.

So, if that's the case in our lives, why should it be any different in politics?
  5. Not quite. At least in most of the rest of our life, we get to choose something that doesn't completely suck. Much of American politics is like choosing between a sandwich made with lamb shit or another sandwich made with calf shit. Either way, it's a sandwich made with the shit of a ruminant.

In my experience, Canadians that take the time to vote are usually trying to get someone removed more than they are trying to get a qualified person (with whom one's views are shared) elected.

For the most part, shared views actions are confined to the Green Party and the other left-wing party (NDP), i.e., the extreme minority parties.

    It's a take-out-the-garbage exercise more than it is a get-some-nice-new-rugs exercise.

As Auntie says when we get pissed we tend to vote to "punish". Sadly that can get you someone who is worse than the bugger you had!!! Revenge can be sweet but in the end the party going in forgets that they got in due to voter disastifaction and then do what they want by claiming they got a mandat from the people. If politicians would remember that they should represent the people who voted for them at least once and a while it might be better. Once they get in the party can vote you out of caucus if you don't toe the party line and you end up sitting as an independent in limbo land. This can be good if you have a minority government where all votes can actually count but in a majority an independent is basically a seat warmer. What I really really want is a none of the above box so we can tell them we don't want particular candidates. :)

NDP has been polling consistently as the 2nd largest party with appx 30% support in the last week: http://www.electionalmanac.com/canada/polls.php

Yes, strong signs that the NDP could become the official opposition. It's possible that the Liberal party has self-destructed.

    Apparently happening in Ottawa too!!

That'll depend a lot on the conversion of poll results to votes and then to seats.

It's probably going to be late tonight or tomorrow before we know how this is going to play out, as well as whether the Governor-General will ask the House of Commons to play Musical Chairs.

    From Sean Devlin (Facebook):

    Dear Friends,

Today we are getting reports out of Guelph, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton & Prince George that people are receiving pre-recorded calls telling them their polling station has changed. This is a Republican-Style illegal hoax that is being used to keep people from voting!
"there have not been any changes in the voting [locations] - Elections Canada
If you receive one of these calls, DIAL *57 to trace the # and WRITE IT DOWN!
and PLEASE LET ELECTIONS CANADA KNOW

THIS IS WHERE YOU REALLY VOTE!

    From CBC.ca May.1.2011

Elections Canada is warning voters not to trust anyone but the agency itself about where they should vote on Monday after reports that some voters are being told to go to the wrong polling stations — some up to an hour away from their homes.

Heads up everyone. Despite the info on your voter registration card, you WILL need additional ID in order to cast your ballot. Who knows if that is being consistently applied but in my SK riding it was the case.

Take two, and remember that the Ontario Health card isn't officially an ID card even if it has a photo.

    P.S. No EFG masks.

Not everyone has the benefit of going on-line to get the official word. The 10 or so pissed-off people at my polling station who were trundling off home to get their ID didn't know. Particularly annoying/burdensome to the elders, especially when, in fact, around these parts everybody knows everybody else.

If however from some reason you have no ID you can take someone from your riding that can vouch for you together with your voter registration card.
  21. DeathHamster Member

Bring some mail like utility bills, bank statements or official stuff that has your name and address on it.
  22. Anonymous Member

Right. But along with my voting card I also received a little 4-page bilingual pamphlet, with a highlighted "Remember. To vote, you must prove your identity and address" and then a long list of what id or documents is valid for identification. I don't know what else they could have done better.

The Conservatives are trying to make Canada part of america. the Libreals are confused. The NDP can do the job but never gets a chance. The bloc wants Qubec to float away. the green party has a great deal but the other four hate them.

Perhaps give out that pamphlet to all voters. I didn't get one. Many Elders in my community couldn't have read it anyway, unless it was in, err, some other language lol.

But I am going to poll my friends to see if they received one.
  25. Ogsonofgroo Member

Yup, just went through that myself so it must be SOP in communities bigger than 100peoples, dunno.
Vote cast, my confidence in the present choices is really 10degrees below meh though. The only thing I hope for is that Harper gets his ass kicked down the road, he reminds me of Mulroney only uglier and more self-rightous.
    Bah humbug!

I can only report from an urban situation and from here, it appears that Elections Canada is a well-oiled machine in terms of providing information to the citizens.

Just about to put on my coat, take the walk and cast my vote and I do hope that all registered voters go out and do it!

    Alittle boy goes to his
dad and asks, 'What is Politics?'

    Dad says, 'Well son, let
me try to explain it this way:

I am the head of the
family, so call me The Prime Minister.

    Your mother is the
administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.

We are here to take care
of your needs, so we will call you the People.
    The nanny, we will
    consider her the WorkingClass.

    And your baby brother,
we will call him the Future.

    Now think about that and
    see if it makes sense.'

    So the little boy goes
off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.

    Later that night, he
hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him.

    He finds that the baby
    has severely soiled his nappy.

    So the little boy goes
to his parent's room and finds his mother asleep..

    Not wanting to wake her,
he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny..

He gives up and goes back tobed.

    The next morning, the
little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now. '

The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.'

The little boy replies, 'The Prime Minister is screwing the Working Class while the
Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and
the Future is in deep shit..'

  39. GO NDP!!! The question is, does the Liberal Party's hatred of Harper trump their distaste for the NDP, to the point they would rather be the NDP's bitch in a minority government?
