But, at the moment, the global financial system has NOT collapsed. I'd like it to stay that way. I want a transitional period that leads to greater transparency, fairness and prosperity. If getting that means letting a few crooks walk free, that's a price I'm willing to pay. If punishing everyone that put us in our current situation necessarily entails plunging the whole globe into poverty, I'm willing to abandon such punishment. Solution-oriented thinking is needed. We need to construct the world we wish to live in. Destroying those who previous behaved in a manner we don't like doesn't move us towards that goal, and could potentially interfere with it. Don't get me wrong; discovering causation and attributing causal roles to the appropriate people and institutions is a necessary part of deconstructing the system, which is an essential step in reconstruction. The transition shouldn't turn a blind eye to things done in the past. But focus PRIMARILY on creating the world we want to live in. Take the long view.

I do believe the attribution of responsibility is an essential step. We must identify the causes. But scapegoating people is a HUGE danger. When you scapegoat, you END the discussion of 'why', often prior to discovering the underlying social cause at the root of the matter. Discovering causal roles is vital. But that doesn't mean removal of individuals is absolutely necessary. It's ideas and policies that wrecked the economy, not people. The only mistake any person has made - is supporting an idea or policy that worked to undermine the economy. It's not necessarily true that people who did this will always continue to do this. Never attribute to malice what can be better explained with ignorance. And keep in mind, though the powers that be may have wrecked the economy through ignorance, most people that are lined up to take over for them are even more ignorant. We need to exploit all information resources. We need the 'powers that be' on board for this transition. We need them contributing their knowledge and experience. And backing them against a wall doesn't work very well at accomplishing this.
