    Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. Julian Assange and Wikileaks have released a massive amount of information on the war in Afghanistan. The fallout from this will be immense.

    He has millions more.

    Implications? Discuss.

"The articles published today are based on thousands of United States military incident and intelligence reports — records of engagements, mishaps, intelligence on enemy activity and other events from the war in Afghanistan — that were made public on Sunday on the Internet."

So you see something wrong with expressing concern over individuals' privacy being violated?

Re: Wikileaks in the News yet again

Yah, but they've learnt from all that - eg: the criticism of WL for how they (were perceived to) have editorialised 'collateral murder' is a large part of the reason why, this time, they relied on established external media to do the contextual analysis and editorialising.

I think, give the newness of the operation and the paradigm, there needs to be some allowance for not getting things quite right, and learning as they go.

Great quote from Assange at the end of that article:
"I enjoy creating systems on a grand scale, and I enjoy helping people who are vulnerable," he said. "And I enjoy crushing bastards. So it is enjoyable work."

You saw his TED talk, right? More particularly, the audience opinion, and final ovation.

You are of course entitled to yours, but the TED audience is not exactly made up of stupid or naive people.

Re: Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

I actually think that wikileaks serves an important function. I just think Julian is a tree hugging hippie that has no real foundation in real life because he is so disconnected from people (37 different schools - couldn't and didn't form real lasting relationships with anyone). He's pissed at mommy and daddy because of that situation.

Oh well. He's a bad ass because he has rebellion in his genes. He said so himself.

Re: Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

I think if we look just at Wikileaks, that would suffice.

Why is the founder involving himself lately?

Re: Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

In our world of dox or GTFO, you might have a point. The legacy world runs on PR and money. PR and raising dosh is what he's doing - plus it's becoming more and more obvious he needs a decent segment of legacy media onside for WL to achieve it's aims.

Re: Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

Assange looks to be letting his ego play a bit.

I know it's an oversimplification, but information is knowledge, knowledge is power, and power corrupts, we're merely seeing the seeds of that corruption.

But, he's identified himself as the 'head' of wikileaks, and as such, has now made himself and his entire project vulnerable to the vissicitudes of identity.

lolno. Posting on a forum spawned from a series of anonymous message boards should make it perfectly obvious why this is not the case.

Re: Wikileaks, Afghanistan: The War Logs

Bloody clever of them to work out which 15,000 documents they've opted to withhold then!

They're just making it up as they go. Typical fucking daily mail bullshit. At least if you access the article via the home page, it's apparent it's an opinion piece, and not 'news'.
