The article says the Catholics are against extending the statute of limitation for sexual abuse crimes. But people who aren't pedophiles may have reasons to question the value of extending the SOL. For example, human memory is very messy. There have been a number of cases of people who thought they must have been sexually abused when they actually weren't.

As opposed to the greater number of children abused who fucking remember. Lets not extend statute of limitations because then the children will grow up and they will be taken seriously?

There's a balance to be found between believing all allegations and believing none of them.

That said, I don't quite see the relevance of the fallibility of human memory to the extension of time limits for criminal cases. I'm not aware of any particular evidence-base for existing time limits in relation to memory.

In each case, the evidence needs to be assessed on its merits; a court can't do that if the case is 'out of time'.

    Still,

    QFT.

If the evidence isn't strong enough - if the memories are false - then let the court system find that out. It's what it's for.

Very few. I fail to see any reason for having SOL on rape or sexual abuse.

I actually looked into the limitations in my state and they were disappointing. I was a victim as a child and was now getting help for it, now I can't do anything about it besides "survive". Such bull.

Agreed, total bull and frustrating as hell to hear of yet another who has fallen into the SOL abyss.

I agree with you. In the mind, there is no SOL.
