Autism has a long and mysterious history in the area of diagnosis. The number of children being diagnosed currently is a direct result of parent knowledge. I have been "observing" autistic children since 1970. I am a speech/language pathologist. Were we able to diagnosis adequately way back when? No. What stopped us? Parents. (more often than not) You see, the symptomatology has always been there. The subtleties, the behaviors are the same now as from 60 years ago. Parents were blamed in the early years. This myth took hold until the 90's. Because Scientologists live within their own world and choose what they want to read, see, etc, they miss out on what is happening in the REAL world.

Seizure disorder does not always accompany autism. SEVERE seizure disorder seldom accompanies autism. When professionals read a young man dies of a severe seizure disorder and his parents are scientologists, we cannot turn off what we know. It is the 21st century. People no longer die from severe seizure disorders. They are treated for said condition.

Professionals who serve the autistic community can easily recognize Jett's behaviors. The ordinary person might not be able to see them.

Did the Travoltas kill their son with the lack of treatment? Not for me to say.

To the people on here who think CofS is anything but a dangerous cult....shame on you. You are not well. The rich and delusional like JT and KP are only that. I guess CofS survives because humans need to believe in something, to belong somewhere. It affects the followers like drugs... the users become unable to discern reality. It's a "religion" that doesn't believe in drugs, when in fact it IS the drug. Check out the symptoms of those in its clutches.

I did watch the video. There was one glancing reference to someone who experimented with LSD and autism. Can't see how it applies to Jett Travolta, that's all.

I read the thread, watched the video and I do not see autism. While we are all playing Quincy MD on the internet over a poor dead boy I will throw in what I see ~ I see Aspergers syndrome. I live with it every day as my 18 year old child has Aspergers. It is often confused with Autism but it is not autism. Its is more of a social disorder. There are certain characterizations in the facial features of people with Aspergers and I see those in Jett's face. My child is extremely bright (173 on his IQ test) and doesn't have retardation or learning disabilities. However I would indeed have to hold his hand in a large crowd, many who are taking pictures and the flashing lights. He is terrified of crowds. His brain would have a lot of trouble processing the large crowd and he would blow a gasket. We stopped medicating my son a few years ago. Even though epilepsy is higher in those with Aspergers my son hasn't shown he is prone to that. I am also not an anti drug Scientology as I think they are kooks. When my son was being medicated he was way more aggressive and even had hallucinations. He was more of a danger to himself and the people around him on the meds. We had to learn behavior modifications and work really hard to help him. He is doing wonderful and is in his Freshmen year at college.

Asperger folks are aware of their surroundings. They don't know how to relate to other humans on any meaningful level. They don't understand the ques we give off in social settings. There are different types and different severity of the disorder but the face is what set it off for me. Since it is lumped with Autism I am guessing that is why John reported what he did. He may not even know about Aspergers which is pretty common for parents not to know or understand it until their kid is diagnosed.

Ha Ha though that was in really poor taste I will admit my family does use a lot of humor in relation to our son's disability. We have said, "stop being an asss (pause) pergers" HA HA
We are not putting him down or making fun of his disability and he knows that. We find humor heals much more then any Scientology kooky therapy

I can understand where you are coming from, Mama. My oldest has Asperger's as well. He will graduate from college this year. The biggest difference between Jett and our sons is the fact that we have acknowledged who our kids are and have been working with them since they were small. Early childhood work is essential to both autistic and aspergers children to at least learn some communication and social skills. Our kids never got hidden away, cared for by staff or left to play video games and eat junk food as has been witnessed/reported in Jett's case. Our kids were never considered PTS 'degraded beings' who 'pulled it in' somehow, nor were we considered those things by our peers for having them.

Whichever his malady, poor Jett never had a chance. All those damn millions could have bought the kid the best therapy in the world, but the parents would have had to go against Hubbard's teachings on health and healing to do so. The parents chose the cult and the rest is history.

Also, Jett Travolta had a serious seizure disorder, which wasn't treated effectively because of cult beliefs. Not every AS person has that additional issue, although it is more likely.

FTR, he was treated for a period of time before it was stopped for unclear reasons.
