    Read the damn thing. Whoever wrote it makes some excellent points. Wiki, like the media, can't seem to understand that making certain information public can put lives at risk. I'll admit that I like it when Wiki exposes some slime ball who's doing something illegal or immoral (often a matter of opinion), but some information should be off-limits.

    And there you have the crux of the Internet censorship debate.

    Shall we start an argument and end this thread in a flame war over internet censorship?

    Cuz, y'know, that was kinda the plan.

    Saw this earlier, raged, then went round the usual raid boards looking for others who'd seen it. Turned up here. However, it looks like the US govt've failed already, so Wikileaks should be safe for now.

    I knew a thread started by a domer would consist of trolling.

    So, I guess they do talk about undermining wikileaks.. because guess what? They are leaking military documents and battle plans. Go figure...

    So yeah, derp derp the military wants their secrets protected... Derp dity derp derp. Is this news? The only way wikileaks can survive is foreign hosts... And then hope the US doesn't follow france and kiwi's lead on packet filtering.

    (Protip: US already packet filters all traffic in US and across satellites. Thanks to Bush's illegal wiretapping)

    That sounds more like a definition of packet inspection, not packet filtering. The former is passive, the latter isn't. A minor point.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    The poster's perspective needs changed. It's not that 'exposing some truths do put lives at risk.' It's that people who make decisions to create situations where lives are put at risk by leaks should consider that possibility when they make their decisions.

    If you're a general and decide to start some super-top-secret operation... and if exposing the operation in the middle could cost the lives of half the people involved... you need to evaluate that contingency when deciding whether to enact your plan. Thing is, if your plan is well justified, sensible, and everyone involved is 'on board', your shit won't leak. If it's questionable, unethical, unwise, or planned poorly, someone WILL leak it - and the deaths will be on YOUR head, NOT THEIRS.

    EXPECT transparency. Encourage the public to DEMAND transparency. Anything you can pull off through cold war spy game tactics beyond that, well... as long as you don't violate the constitutional rights of your electorate or the human rights of all persons, have at it.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    This is perfect irony, if there is such a thing.

    Their shit gets leaked to Wikileaks, and so they write up a report about their plan to discredit and effectively destroy it. Then this report gets leaked to Wikileaks as well.

    So...who didn't see that coming?

    They're so cute when they think they run the internet.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    I wonder if we're not just in a transitional period...
    I mean, I rant about how governments can become tyrannical, and how the right to free speech must be held nearly sacred, and so on... but free speech has never had this power before. While it may be true that some governments (particularly tyrannical ones like Iran) are terrified of the end that the internet will bring to them, there are just as many people out there who just fail to understand it and the significant change it's made.

    As such, something like the US Government - where there's no single 'head', no all-powerful leader, and a very large body of semi-autonomous departments and offices at many different levels, there's inevitably going to be a learning curve as those in power start to 'get' this new world, and as those who refuse to 'get' it retire or die and are replaced by folk from our generation.

    I'm still optimistic about the future, and I don't think the US government is an all-out tyranny (though I certainly take issues with many things, like our prison system, our drug prohibitions, our foreign policy and deployment of military, and efforts to thwart free expression of ideas...), but I think we're going to see many more examples like this. And every time it happens, a lesson will be learned. This is a small battle in the internet war, and this is a victory for the internet - as whatever department head green-lit this operation will (hopefully) be shamed, ridiculed, and will learn that active censorship is exclusively a tool of tyranny (whereas secrecy is slightly more hazy, though transparency is generally the better plan).

    read the danm thing. i read someone's post saying that wikileaks shouldn't of leaked Table of Equiptment (TOE) or such info about the military... well think about it, if the U.S. hadn't gone to war then there wouldn't be a need to leak such info to point out how much money the U.S. is spending on the war and how
    but then again, some might say, "who gives a shit how much money they spend, as long as they kick some terrorist arse" right?... well maybe that's why the world fell into a reccession, money is bing spent in BOMBS!! YAY!!!

    Lol, you say that like "folk from our generation" are somehow totally uncorruptable.
  22. Anonymous Member

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    YOU SIR, took my words.... its not that we are not corruptable... its more like we can be more concious about all things in general and thus increase our sense of right and wrong... or simply choose to do what "the people' demand or at least what is 'just'.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    Sorry if that's the impression I made... I believe we must ALWAYS be skeptical and critical of our government, we must always demand transparency, and we must never allow them to coerce us into forfeiting our right to free speech. That goes for all governments, regardless of whether it's 'our' guys or 'their guys' running it. When I said 'folk from our generation', I meant people that get the significance of the Interenet, and appreciate just how significant a force it is for positive change. Not that our generation universally understands this.

    I made it a 'generation' thing because I see the efforts mentioned in the OP as a cold-war fossil. The 'win above all else', 'spy vs. spy' shit very much stems from the cold war, and it was a huge step backwards for transparency and democracy in government. We were so terrified that capitalism might fall or that communism might win that we began to entertain the idea of selling out the rights the country were founded on to ensure capitalism was the victor. And I'm saying that as a hard-core libertarian free-market capitalist (I have so much faith in the capitalist system, that I think it would have won even without the clandestine shit we pulled - and the free expression of ideas on a global communications network only strengthens that advantage, while undermining the strength that clandestine operations offer altnerative systems).

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    Yeah, I understood the drift of what you meant.
    I was watching BBC Panorama this evening. It was about the "old world" music industry wanting the UK government to implement a 3-strikes rule to force ISPs to cut off subscriber's internet connections for suspected file sharing of their copyright content. Some of the supporters, of the unworkable "solution" to the industry's failure to grasp that thier business model died years ago, were not stupid old curmudgeons but people of a generation and ilk who you would have thought would know better.

    When your once-successful empire is slowly circling the drain of irrelevence, you may fight tooth and nail for whatever handhold you can get. There's an old saying, 'you'll never convince a man that there is no God if his job and livelihood depend on him believing it.' Fighting scientology, we above all should understand this point.

    They're basically crawling to the government and saying 'But we're TOO BIG TO FAIL! HANDOUT PLEASE! It won't even cost you anything, just pass this legislation - we'll do all the enforcing ourselves!'

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    /Epic facepalm.

    How about these lovely gems: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughful, committed individuals can change the world, indeed it's the only thing that ever has."

    Oh, and "Fuck the establishment!"

    Isn't that what you were saying, in essence? The former was by Margaret Meade, and the latter was by some dirty hippie. The problem? The damned hippies grew up, or at least most of 'em, and they BECAME the establishment. As for change, I'll be damned if I can see much of what they wanted. All I see are ideals that were abandoned by those who once professed them, and those very people, those noble, bright-eyed revolutionaries, became fucking sellouts. I'm not angry, though, because the ancient Romans got one thing right: "O quam cito transit gloria mundi!" O how quickly passes the glory of the world! It's the nature of things.

    Instead, I quote a classic poem by William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming."

    "Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    "Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
    The darkness drops again; but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

    This is the truth in all of its horrible, naked glory. The best we can realistically hope for is to make things just that tiniest bit better. To hope for anything more is bullshit at best, and an outright delusion at worst.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    The problem is hubris.

    Every generation has a significant segment of people that think their parents and grandparents and ancestors were retarded, unsophisticated fucks, who failed to recognize that the current generation has the solutions for all the worlds problems, that the centuries of societal development have been waiting for THIS generation to illuminate all the foolishness that has come before.

    What we internet libertarians (to use a very broad generalization) are up against amongst our peers are people who believe that the need to 'do good', and to do it expediently, outweighs the toes that will be stepped on. Take hate crimes, for instance (hate speech, to be exact); better to stifle the inbred trash even if it does smack of censorship, their reasoning goes.

    I find, as opposed to these fucktards who support hate crimes laws, it's far better for the ignorant bastards to make asses out of themselves. It makes them look even worse, and it provides lulz. Or, this:

    Identity of CIA and other undercover law enforcement or defense staff. Could put lives at risk.

    Identity of foreigners acting as spies for us in their own countries. Same reason.

    Re: US intelligence planned to destroy wikileaks (DOX INSIDE TINFOILERS GTFO)

    Seems like the prudent thing to do would be to only use such tactics when it's CLEARLY justified, so that nobody with access to that information would compromise the mission.

    If the justification is mirky, the new internet culture and sites like wikileaks pretty much ensures you're sending people to their death.

    So, y'know. Think about that before you put clandistine operations into effect.

    Gawker is on it: Is the U.S. Government Spying on a Tiny Secret-Sharing Website? - wikileaks - Gawker

    But apparently some people are claiming not to be able to see this article. The U.S. government seems to be attacking Wikileaks viciously and trying to hide what it is that they plan on releasing, which is apparently footage or dox of some kind about the U.S. military bombing and killing 97 civilians of Afghanistan.
