Forgot to mention -- instead of "Scientology made news in January" how about "Scientology caught the attention of Anonymous in January."

    Urgle.

    Hope this helped!

Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

Protests are planned over 100 cities worldwide on March 15, at 11 a.m. local time. The protesters, who organize on a number of internet sites, refer to themselves collectively as 'Anonymous'. Because of Church of Scientology’s history of defaming and harassing its critics, most protesters say they will wear masks, scarves and other props to protect their identities, as they speak out for those intimidated into silence .

I thought that the last sentence would be important highlighting the fact that the message should get to the people. It can of course be altered.

    magitad's version slightly revised:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 12 MARCH 2008
    RE: CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY
To contact Anonymous or for additional information about the Church of Scientology and Anonymous’ global protests, visit http://www.enturbulation.org.

    Clearwater, FL

A prominent Scientologist (<- INSERT NAME HERE) filed for a restraining order at ( INSERT COURT HERE PLUS JUDGE’S NAME) on (INSERT DAY, DATE then at O’CLOCK if available) against a collective of internet-based individuals who plan to protest the church’s policies and actions in Clearwater and around the world on March 15. The individuals, who organize online and refer to themselves collectively as "Anonymous," rarely know each other's names in real life, but are planning their second demonstration in 5 weeks to raise awareness of the abusive policies and practices of the Church of Scientology and related organizations.

The current petition for a restraining order was filed against "an association of people known as Anonymous." The Church of Scientology has "refused to provide a copy of the lawsuit or discuss who it seeks to restrain," according to Robert Farley of the St. Petersburg Times.

Anonymous entered the public eye on February 10 when more than 9,000 people in approximately 110 cities worldwide demonstrated without incident outside local Scientology centers. The protest was organized in less than a month and was the largest demonstration against the Church of Scientology to date.

Anonymous maintains that the Church of Scientology continues to act in defiance of the constitutional right to free speech. Scientology reentered the public spotlight in January when a promotional video featuring Tom Cruise found its way to the internet. Church of Scientology attorneys scrambled to write hundreds of cease-and-desist letters to websites hosting the video. Bloggers claimed defense under the Fair Use policy and Gawker editor Ben Popken refused to remove the video, which has now been viewed over 1.6 million times on YouTube.

    Why the Masks?

Because the Church of Scientology has written policies that advocate libeling and attacking its critics and a documented history of following those policies, most protesters plan to wear masks, scarves and other items to conceal and protect their identities.

Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

Admittedly nitpicky suggestion for opening sentence:

A prominent Scientologist (<- INSERT NAME HERE) *has asked* ( INSERT COURT HERE PLUS JUDGE’S NAME) *to issue* (EXACT NAME OF LEGAL DOCUMENT)

My concern is that while "filed for" may be appropriate in an exchange of pleadings, it is more important to communicate exactly what happened in lay terms in a press release designed for public consumption.
  7. Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

trying to keep it SHORT & SWEET

replace "nameless faceless" (might be creepy for some readers) from the first paragraph with "unknown"

drop "or of the press" when citing the 1st amendment (unless the CoS is trying to stop our presses?)

the "prominent scientologist" in some versions is [Pat Harney, a spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology]

any chance a clearwater person can get down to the courthouse this MORNING and get a copy of thw actual cort order?

Scientology deliberately filed just as the courthouse was closing so that the press would not have time to see the filing overnight. To whoever asked why it too 5 weeks, that was for a reason: 4 weeks ago a judge would have told them to get names and details between then and now. TRO work best at the last minute, and the largest legal team ever assembled for a tax exempt organization knows this
  8. Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

I've made a few changes, as I thought it sounded (in the latest version) as though the main thing we took issue with was the Tom Cruise video. I got the impression that this release is for media everywhere, so tried not to make it too Clearwater-specific. I may well be wrong in though. :D

Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

Regarding a backup plan. If the judge happens to be in the pocket of Scientologists and approves the injunction, it will only apply to members of Anonymous, correct?

If an injunction is declared, those who protest only have to add, "I am not an Anonymous member," to their signs.

    I am an Enturbulator!

So Anonymous protests all other sites and Enturbulators protest Clearwater.

What proof do police have that you are a member of Anonymous?

For any lawyers reading. What are the legal recourses for false arrest? If they can't prove you are Anonymous, are the police open to lawsuits for false arrest?

Remove all references to "a group". Groups have leaders & meetings. Anonymous does not. Anonymous is an IDEA. I don't know who the heck any of you are & you don't know who I am. Am I anonymous? Are you anonymous? Are ex-scientologists anonymous? Are clear water residents anonymous? Are St. Petersburg residents anonymous? What does it take to be a member? This injunction effectively prevent anyone & everyone from protesting the Church of Scientology's abuses.

It might be better to show the changes that you've made so it's easier to tell what the improvements actually are, instead of having to read it over and over again and compare...

in my personal opinion, we should focus teh PR a little les on the history of anonymous and more on the attack on free speech that the church is commiting. the history of anonymous will intrigue some people, but getting them riled up about their rights will enrage people that would otherwise not have cared about scientology.

Who is Anonymous? An Idea or a movement. Anonymous has been referred to as a Stand Alone Complex. The only single item that binds "Anonymous" together is the concern that the Church of Scientology is a highly abusive organization that needs to be brought to light peacefully through free speech.

Are the citizens of Clear Water Anonymous? Are the citizens of St. Peter'sburg Anonymous? Are ex-scientologists? Are the free-zoner's? Are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, teachers, reporters, neighbors, anyone you see... are they Anonymous?

Barring "Anonymous" from protesting the Church of Scientology is tantamount to barring every man, woman and child on this planet from protesting the Church of Scientology.

What organization, holds such sway in the United States that they are above and beyond peaceful public protest?

Scratch my version & the one just prior to it. History lesson is not necessary & the "Tom Cruise video" is actually a weak point.

Agree with all the changes except for "viciously attacking its critics". I know that it's true, but it sounds too much like us inserting our slant on things, and IMO lessens the chance of it being used as a result.

Other than that I think the changes are good. I think that it does keep a reasonable balance between focussing on the real issues (i.e. the "church"), and at the same time gives journalists a bit of background on us. Without that, it's not easy for it to be reported.

THIS PEOPLE, is a FIVE STAR press release. Short, clear, and it's got all the info the lazy press people need. The name of the guy who filed the injunction is Roger Akiyama.

Here's the location to throw press releases for free: http://www.free-press-release.com/. Also, gregg, one of the Boston anons, has a list of over 27000 press contacts. Have him do the email blast.

If we had hacked MySpace, it would have made worldwide news in minutes.
  32. Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

Personally I think Magitad's realease is good. However if it's gonna be used, it definitely needs some changes making, because as it stands it sounds as though the main thing that we're objecting too is the Tom Cruise video. Other than that it's really good.

I agree with you. The free speech issue is pretty strong, and is the subject of the SPtimes.com cover story right now.

What that story doesn't mention is the precedent -- Scn, Inc has tried to stifle free speech before in Clearwater [see below]:

WHATEVER goes out, please add some URLS to the bottom - provide maybe 5 to 8 resources for journalists that reference what issue you choose to highlight.

The church spray-paints boundaries near its buildings to show protesters where they cannot go.
    By THOMAS C. TOBIN

© St. Petersburg Times, published December 4, 1999

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEARWATER -- In the ongoing quest for dominance of Clearwater's public sidewalks, another unusual turn.

The Church of Scientology has taken the liberty of showing its leading critic where he may and may not walk with a picket sign this weekend.

Hundreds of bright orange dots decorated the public sidewalks and streets surrounding Scientology buildings in Clearwater on Friday, the work of church staffers with spray paint cans and measuring tapes.

The painting was done in response to a judge's order Thursday that Scientology critic Robert Minton stay at least 10 feet away from 17 church buildings in Clearwater. By Friday morning the orange markings appeared like an overnight snow, showing lines of demarcation 10 feet from each property.

The boundaries were visual aids for Minton and those joining him this weekend to protest Scientology and memorialize Scientologist Lisa McPherson, who died Dec. 5, 1995, after 17 days in the care of church staffers.

In some places, the dots were connected by orange chalk lines. At Hacienda Gardens, a residence for Scientology staffers, the church had installed long rows of tiny orange survey flags that told Minton he was welcome to walk on a narrow strip of grass near the curb on Saturn Avenue.

Minton's attorney, Denis deVlaming, compared the spray-painted markings to graffiti.

Police Chief Sid Klein said the markings were "defacing public property." A short time later, Scientology officials told Klein they would remove the markings. They also gave him detailed drawings of Scientology buildings, complete with marks showing the 10-foot boundary.

Scientology critics mocked the markings Friday by wearing round orange stickers on both their clothes and picket signs.

However, they were kept at a distance from their usual picketing spot in front of Scientology's Fort Harrison Hotel. The church has erected a giant scaffold in front of the hotel and has torn up sidewalks around the building.

Church officials say the work was planned months ago and is not related to the pickets. But protesters say it's an obvious effort to keep them at bay.

The judge's 10-foot order resulted from an incident the night of Oct. 31 in front of the Fort Harrison. Minton was carrying an anti-Scientology picket sign while a church staffer, Richard Howd, followed him with a video camera.

Angered at Howd's closeness, Minton pushed his sign in Howd's face and was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor battery.

In addition to ordering Minton to stay at least 10 feet from Scientology properties, Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Thomas E. Penick Jr. ordered Howd to stay at least 20 feet away from Minton.

The judge said he was trying to prevent the sidewalk gamesmanship that led to the Oct. 31 incident and others between Minton and Scientology. He called it "picket chicken."

But both sides were confused by wording that extended the order to all "officers, agents, servants, employees" of Minton and Howd, as well as "those persons in active concert" with them.

Minton's camp interpreted that to mean all Scientologists were ordered to stay away from him. Scientology interpreted it to mean that all the anti-Scientology protesters in town this weekend had to stay 10 feet away from church buildings.

Enter Klein, who was left to cut through the confusion and enforce the order.

The chief met with both sides Friday, telling them his officers will focus on Minton and Howd, and that if anyone else in either camp engages in "picket chicken," there will be one warning.

"For those who elect not to comply, we're not going to play any games," Klein said. "They will be on their way very quickly to the county jail."

The chief said several police vans will be available today and tonight, just in case.

Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

Is the irony lost on everyone that "anonymous" issuing a press release validates the concept that there is an "association of individuals known as anonymous" as asserted in the petition for injunction?

Re: URGENT: HELP NEEDED WITH PRESS RELEASE; 3PM EDT DEADILINE

I agree that in this particular case, individuality, disassociation, and decentralization are strengths. It just brings us back to what we are -- individuals.

Those who collaborated on the press release can release it as such -- a statement by a group of (insert #) of those who have protested. Most haven't read it, didn't contribute to it, and while they may agree with it, they had no part in it. Thus, no one can speak for all anons, even with cooperation from others here.

For example: I can't issue any statements, or press releases, or anything as anything other than myself. I'm just one person who learned about this elsewhere, came here, and have been following it closely, approving of 99 percent of what I've seen.

    This is exactly true.

I don't know if Gregg is sending this release to his massive list; doing so takes days. If he is, it's his call which version to use. I would encourage any and all of you to pick a version you like, and send it to your local media. I'll try to identify some specific news organizations to target and get it to them. I like what i see, thank you all for all your help! Let's get the word out now.

AKIYAMA ROGER has filed for a restraining order against a collective of internet-based individuals who plan to protest the church’s policies and actions in Clearwater and around the world on March 15. The individuals, who organize online and refer to themselves collectively as "Anonymous," rarely know each other's names. Akiyama Roger. Yep.

Alright so I found the name of the person who submitted the injunction/temporary restraining order against 'Anonymous'. However there doesn't appear to be a judge assigned to the case yet, nor a specific time as to when it was filed, other than it was some time yesterday. Hopefully this isn't too late and someone can still send this off. However, here is some more information for those that would like to look into this further.
