UN denounces Vatican over child abuse and demands immediate action

Devastating UN report demands Vatican 'immediately remove' all clergy who are known or suspected child abusers

The Vatican has failed to acknowledge the huge scale of clerical sex abuse and has implemented policies that have led to "the continuation of the abuse and the impunity of the perpetrators", a UN panel said on Wednesday in a scathing rebuke of the Holy See's handling of the global scandal.

In grimly worded findings released by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the watchdog urged the Holy See to "immediately remove all known and suspected child sexual abusers" from their posts in the church and hand over the cases to law enforcement authorities in the countries concerned.

The committee said it was "particularly concerned" that in dealing with allegations of child sex abuse, "the Holy See has consistently placed the preservation of the reputation of the church and the protection of the perpetrators above children's best interests, as observed by several national commissions of inquiry."

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has no power to enforce its demands, no authority to insist that any child is protected. All they can do is to investigate and to write reports. This is, the Vatican says, “interference”. The Vatican says they will only hand over evidence against a priest who abused children if secular law enforcement has arrested the priest on charges independently of the Vatican’s help: until secular law enforcement acts, apparently hiding evidence that a priest abused children doesn’t constitute a cover-up.

I can’t think of a good way of ending this post. There exist men who are employed by the Catholic Church, who sexually abused children, who are known to their employers to have abused children, and the Catholic Church says that a report requiring them to uncover these men’s crimes to law enforcement is “interference”.

Mandatory reporting is enforced for most other professions that have contact with children.

Says a lot about the church that it would not hold it's priests to the same transparency standards as doctors, psychologists, teachers, etc are held to.

And that's where the whiff of cultiness wafts in. When it is no longer about doing what is right and becomes all about maintaining the image to make money and make others make more money, it is no longer a faith but a business, ie cult.
