Miss Lovely gets major treatment Down Under

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker

Our thanks to ABC Australia, which finally posted its recent story about Paulette Cooper and our book to YouTube so we can embed it here.

Published by ABC News (Australia) on July 27, 2015

Journalist Paulette Cooper was once the Church of Scientology's public enemy number one. After publishing a book critical of the church in the 1970s she was harassed in a vicious campaign which included death threats and being framed for a serious crime.

Home of the brash, outrageous, and free

London turned out to be everything we hoped. Conway Hall was filled last night, and we had fun on stage with BBC reporter John Sweeney and the man who published our books, Humfrey Hunter. Conway Hall recorded the program, and we hope we did all right. The red tie we’re wearing came from Savile Row courtesy of some very generous Underground Bunker readers. And we all repaired to the Old Nick pub nearby after the show for some imbibing. Thanks to Jon Atack for making the trip down from Nottingham, and to so many other fascinating Bunker readers who told us how much they enjoy taking part in this ongoing experiment.

Scientology Is Losing Its Hold On Celebrities | The Federalist

On the heels of the release of the Going Clear documentary, one of the journalists at the forefront of covering Scientology, Tony Ortega, released a book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely. It profiled a woman, Paulette Cooper, who courageously faced off against Scientology when it was in its infancy. After Cooper began writing about the group, Scientology took aim, hell bent on destroying her life.

She was framed for sending bomb threats, arrested and faced ten years in prison. Fighting that legal battle, and many others, was financially ruinous. Cooper’s personal life was infiltrated by Scientology loyalists and followers and the “church” even went so far as to plant their agents as her roommates and best friends. Cooper places the blame for marrying late in life on the group, explaining her inability to be financially and emotionally stable because of the group’s campaign against her.

A generation later, there’s a new and unexpected warrior against Scientology, and she has two weapons Cooper never had: fame and a deep inside knowledge of the group, having been raised in it. Leah Remini is best known for her role on the King of Queens sitcom and now as the star of her own TLC reality show Leah Remini: It’s All Relative.

Why Remini Ended Her Relationship With The Cult

For the last few years, Scientology watchers have observed Remini’s detachment from the group, one of its most high-profile defections. This detachment seems to have begun at the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, according to Tony Ortega.

Tonight, it’s Boston! And that has us thinking about Beantown’s connections to ‘Miss Lovely’

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, August 24, 2015

Hey, we’re in Boston tonight for the resumption of our tour. While Paulette Cooper is cruising to London, we’ll be near Harvard Square talking about the book we wrote about her. (We’re hoping to reunite with Paulette for another joint appearance this fall.)

Our appearance tonight has us thinking about a couple of mentions of Boston in our book.

In the summer of 1973 Paulette had been indicted after Scientology operatives managed to get her fingerprint on a piece of stationery and then typed up a bomb threat they mailed to the New York org, then called the FBI and told them Paulette was threatening to blow up a church. Paulette was facing fifteen years in federal prison and a $15,000 fine, and she was looking for ways to build a defense before her trial, which was scheduled for October. Desperate for legal help, she decided to pay a visit to famous defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, who was actually disbarred at the time. So she took the train to Boston, and here’s what The Unbreakable Miss Lovely says happened next:

I'm not sure how the second article to be posted online about something can be an "exclusive", but here ya go:

EXCLUSIVE: 'I met someone whose family gave me life' - 72 years on, Holocaust survivor thanks the son of the Dutch hero who bought her freedom when she was just a baby by bribing an SS guard
    • Paulette Cooper, 73, was taken to Mechelen transit camp in June 1943
    • Her father's best friend secured her and her sister's release with a bribe
    • Paulette was adopted and has lived in America since August 28, 1948
    • Received an email four years ago that explained her family past
    • Now has met for the first time the son of the Dutchman who saved her
    • Cried and hugged Peter de Hoo, whose father paid $62,000 to an SS man

PC is an amazing and beautiful person, what she endured at the hands of Scientology is an appalling testament to the failure of the U.S. justice system. I feel that what they don't realize is that the hurdle of litigation l costs at first, for the courts/tax-payers, may seem high at the time but, the costs of dealing with the debris, ie. poor, mentally fucked-up peoples, and the long-term health issues, is much, much, higher over-all.

    L. Ron Hubbard's legacy,~ A nest of preditating , blood-sucking, morally challenged no-minds harbouring delusions of serving the planet... Gah!

    Gah! again!

To the best of my knowledge, Daily Mail is UK based and with the UK, British insularity often prevails there.

For them, although Tony Ortega broke the story globally on Sunday, August 30th, the Daily Mail believe they have an "exclusive" for the UK, ignoring the world-at-large and where the story actually came from.

However, to their credit, it is marvelous how many of them have learned to walk upright and mimic human speech.

    Yupperz mon! ^^^ (up there)

Its is of consideration that there are thousands of students who take journalism courses every year as an added course etc.... if only 1% keep writing...~ There's a whole new generation growing up that will speak (the truth), and old-school, ass-kissing toadies (et-al), will have to smarten up or learn to eat a lot of crow and expect great jorbs at McD's.

Back where it all started: Hoping to see you in Phoenix to talk Scientology then and now

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, September 15, 2015

...yes, the 141-seat theater is “sold out,” but it’s a free ticket, and inevitably some of the people who secured spots early on change their minds. So please, if you’re interested in seeing us on stage at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, at 555 N. Central Ave at the Cronkite Theater on the 2nd floor at 5:30 pm, please show up and we’ll find room for you.

I just got home from Tony's presentation, mentioned above.

Tony began with his background in journalism, which by itself would have made for a worthwhile lecture for the journalism students that made up part of the audience.

Having laid the foundation, Tony spoke about Paulette Cooper's incredible story, and from there, those wacky folks in Scientology, the cult that just keeps on giving.

The hall looked virtually full, and judging by the audience's reactions to many of Tony's anecdotes, pretty much everyone present seemed to be well aware of this cult's greed, deception, deviousness, and all-round evil.

I don't want to go into too much detail about what he spoke about, so to make this brief, it was obvious that those in attendance were impressed by both the degree of the cult's madness and the passion that drives Tony to continue with his research.

We hadn't actually met before, so afterwards I introduced myself to him using my real name, and he was happy to meet me since we've been friends on Facebook for years and knew each other through my occasionally sharing tips with him. When I quietly mentioned that I was "The Wrong Guy" here, he perked up and said he's here every day.

There were dozens of people in line to speak to him, so I kept our conversation brief. Hopefully the next time we talk, we'll have time to discuss more important things, like keeping the cats in our lives happy.

We’re in Cleveland today to talk about Scientology and you’re invited

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, September 23, 2015

Hey, your proprietor is in Cleveland today, our first trip to this fair city and a visit we’ve been really looking forward to. In the evening we’re giving a talk about our book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, but before that a friendly Bunkerite has agreed to show us around town. Are we lucky or what?

If you’re in the area, come on down for the event, which is free and sponsored by Center for Inquiry-Northeast Ohio. We’ll be at the Parma Heights Library at 7 pm. We hear there are pre- and post-parties planned by the local Bunkeroos, so you might get in on those, too. Wow, that’s a lot of yarns we’re going to need to spin. We may have to dig deep into our secret stuff to keep that party going.

Today will mark our second incursion into Canada on our book tour, and our first return to Vancouver BC in many years. We hope you’ll join us at Seven Dining Lounge at 53 West Broadway starting at 7 pm. The event is free, so come on down and let’s talk Scientology and have a drink or two.

Last night we were in Seattle, and what a stellar group of people came out to see us. Seattle Skeptics and Seattle Atheists teamed up to host the event at Razzi’s Pizzeria on the north side of town. The room they booked held 70 people, but an overflow room held about another 30. It was another full venue on our tour. “This place is packed like a Scientology org in 1972,” we quipped.

Just a partial list of some of the former Scientologists who came out to see us: Amy Scobee and Mat Pesch, and Amy’s stepfather Mark Elliot. Gary “Jackson” Morehead. Rachel Denk. Camilla Andersson. And one of the real stars of Going Clear, Tom DeVocht.

Melbourne venue announced, and tickets going FAST

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, October 6, 2015

Hey, our Australia events are coming up quickly, and we’re getting pretty excited about it. Yesterday, our Melbourne venue was finally revealed when the Wheeler Centre announced that it was hosting our talk on October 25, and with ABC journalist Steve Cannane. The Wheeler Centre is at 176 Little Lonsdale Street, our event will take place at 3 pm (it’s a Sunday) and tickets are free. But grab them quick. Steve emailed us last night and said 250 seats are already spoken for!

We’re starting our tour in Sydney on Friday night October 23 at the Giant Dwarf Theater, a premiere venue that will be filming us, so there’s a door charge. Kickass Australian TV journalists Steve Cannane and Bryan Seymour will both join us on stage. (Unfortunately, Senator Nick Xenophon’s schedule prevents him from attending, but he’ll join us in his home district in Adelaide on October 28.)

Now, if we could just get some word of what’s happening in Perth. We think a venue is close to being secured!

Countdown to Friday: ‘Scientology’s Dirty Tricks’ on the menu in Sydney

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, October 18, 2015

Hey, Sydney, we hear 2,300 of you crammed into the premiere of Going Clear back in June — that’s more people who admitted to being Scientologists in your country’s last census!

So this Friday, you’ll get a chance to meet one of the people in that film — the proprietor of this website, in fact — which recently won three Emmy Awards and is now angling for an Oscar nomination.

And not only that, but we’ll be accompanied on stage by two of Australia’s amazing television journalists who keep an eye on Scientology, ABC’s Steve Cannane and Channel 7’s Bryan Seymour.

We only wish the US of A had TV journalists with the sand of these two, who aren’t afraid to expose Scientology and its nefarious goings on. Both of them have an excellent understanding of the subject, and take on Scientology with a relish that simply doesn’t exist in this country.

The three of us are appearing at the Giant Dwarf Theatre at 199 Cleveland Street, Redfern, on Friday at 8pm in our appearance, titled “Scientology’s Dirty Tricks: Then and Now.” Grab your tickets before they’re gone. (Our Melbourne event is already sold out.)

Speaking of Melbourne, our event there happens on Sunday afternoon at 3 pm at the Wheeler Center. And even though the tickets (which are free!) have been “sold out,” we encourage you to show up if you still want to come. When tickets are free, inevitably some folks don’t come who had reserved seats.

We’ll have more news about our Adelaide and Perth dates in a few days.

Tony Ortega: investigating the Church of Scientology | ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Since its beginnings in the 1950s, the Church of Scientology has attracted a lot of attention, much of it unwanted.

Celebrities like Tom Cruise and John Travolta helped raise the church's profile and appeal, especially in the 1990s.

However, reports of harassment of critics and former members and ill treatment of active members point to the darker side of the highly secretive organisation.

Tony Ortega is a New York-based journalist who chronicles what the church is up to on a daily basis.

He has written a book about one woman who was so intensely harassed by the Church of Scientology that it destroyed her life. The church referred to her as 'Miss Lovely'.

    Sydney comes through

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, October 24, 2015

Wow, what a first couple of days we had in Sydney. After we arrived following the 14-hour flight from Los Angeles, Bryan Seymour picked us up at the airport and took us directly to the Channel 7 studios, where we were put right onto The Morning Show for a lengthy segment that really got a lot of attention. Soon we were hearing that the mid-day show The Daily Edition wanted us, Bryan did his own piece, and we were also called in by the Sunrise program the next morning. Meanwhile, Steve Cannane was arranging for us to appear on numerous radio shows and TV over at the ABC network. We were basically running from one show to another all the way up to Friday night’s event at the Giant Dwarf Theatre in Redfern.

It was especially a treat for us that Ramana Dienes-Browning came early so we could finally meet her for the first time, backstage. And so many others made the scene, including many Bunkerites. The theater had 180 seats out and only a few weren’t filled. And what a great show put on by Steve Cannane and Bryan Seymour. We’re glad we were along for the ride!

Cannane will be with us in Melbourne for Sunday afternoon’s event at the Wheeler Center. (It’s “sold out,” but it’s also free, so come on by anyway even if you don’t have a ticket to see if there’s space). And then Bryan Seymour will be with us in Adelaide, where we’ll join Nick Xenophon, and Bryan is also coming with us to Perth!

Tony Ortega’s upcoming appearances (and check out the interactive map to our ongoing tour):

Oct 25: Melbourne, The Wheeler Centre, 3 pm, free but reservations recommended (with Steve Cannane)

Oct 28: Adelaide, Wheatsheaf Hotel, (with Sen. Nick Xenophon and Bryan Seymour)

Oct 30: Perth, Collins Street Centre, Collins St and Shaftesbury St, South Perth, 7 pm (with Bryan Seymour)

Now there's a newer article than the one above, with a longer response from the cult.

The Church of Scientology responds to Tony Ortega's claims | Yahoo7

The Church of Scientology Australia have sent us a statement responding to our segment featuring Tony Ortega.

"Tony Ortega’s credentials are that of a blogger who is making his living from attacking Scientology and creating controversy. He is a paid anti-Scientologist. So one can’t imagine him ever wanting to resolve anything with the Church of Scientology because then he would be out of a job.

"It is always in his interest to have a conflict because it lines his pockets.

"Mr Ortega never ever talks about the considerable charitable and social betterment programs the church engages in and supports which have outstanding success at improving lives across the community. To tell the real story of Scientology would upset his agenda.

"The Church has always been sincere about addressing valid concerns and remains committed to that.

"Regarding his book, the Church settled all outstanding claims with Paulette Cooper in 1985. It is a matter of public record that the current Church management disbanded the rogue unit with which she was having trouble long before then. The Church has neither heard from nor been involved in anything related to Ms. Cooper for 30 years.

"Ortega's book is full of errors. For example, the Church debunked the Manson myth four decades ago and even recovered damages over a book that included similar untruthful statements. Manson never had ties to Scientology.

"The Church of Scientology is a charitable organization recognized by a unanimous decision of five Judges of the High Court of Australia in 1983 and we remain so today.

"The Church is dedicated to its religious, social and humanitarian missions. For more information see [cult link removed]."

At the end of our journey, we offer thanks to this website’s supporters

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, October 30, 2015

When this post pops up at 7 am New York time, it will be 7 pm in Perth, Australia, and your proprietor will be starting the final event on our book tour with the help of Channel 7 journalist Bryan Seymour.

Our book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, came out in May, and we then started our travels, beginning our tour in California. Since then, we’ve wandered around the US, Europe, and now even Australia. And wherever we went, no matter the size of the crowd, there were always people who had taken the time to see us — some traveling huge distances — who told us that they read this website every day, and who tried to make us understand what it means to them to be a part of this community.

That’s the part that’s really kept us going. Meeting Bunkerites from Clearwater to Seattle, from London to Phoenix, from Melbourne to Paris, has really made the years of work reporting on this strange beat all worth it.

We’d love to hear your memories of this summer and fall’s events. It’s all gone by like a blur for us, and we’d like to hear your stories.

Then, since we’ll be trapped here in Western Australia for a little longer, we sure hope someone live-blogs the Dan Harris interview of Leah Remini coming up at 10 pm New York time on ABC. Let us know how she does!

Our book tour is concluded for now. We’ll let you know about future appearances.

    Previous events: Santa Barbara (5/16), Hollywood (5/17), Orange County (5/17), San Diego (5/20), San Francisco (5/22), New York (6/11), Chicago (6/20), Toronto (6/22), Clearwater (6/28), Washington DC (7/12), Hartford (7/14), Denver (7/17), Dallas (7/20), Houston (7/22), San Antonio (7/24), Austin (7/25), Paris (7/29), London (8/4), Boston (8/24), Phoenix (9/15), Cleveland (9/23), Minneapolis (9/24), Portland (9/27), Seattle (9/28), Vancouver BC (9/29), Sydney (10/23), Melbourne (10/25), Adelaide (10/28), and Perth (10/30).
