    Scientology’s First ‘Victim’

    L. Ron Hubbard called her a bitch, the FBI found files on her in its raids: The story of Scientology's most famous critic.

    By M.L. Nestel, The Daily Beast

    “That bitch Paulette Cooper!”

    Those were the choice words belted out by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard back in 1974 as he pounded on his desk while playing Commodore aboard his yacht, the Apollo.

    Cooper, one of the earliest writers to look into the Church of Scientology’s inner workings, has long maintained that Hubbard (or LRH, as he’s often referred to) had it out for her. Just tally up the 19 lawsuits slapped against Cooper by the Church, the 40 lawyers she retained, and the 50 days of depositions—including one reportedly involving a Scientology lawyer who pressed Cooper for a stool sample. (Cooper quipped back: “If you want one, you’ll get it—on your head.”)

    This story of Hubbard’s maritime rage is an incredible nugget in the middle of Tony Ortega’s new book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, which lands on bookstands this week. Ortega managed to unearth the anecdote after poring over a deposition of Tonja Burden, who was only 15 at the time. Burden was one of Hubbard’s "Messengers,” young females tasked with lighting his cigarettes, prepping his showers, and laundering his shirts “13 times to get any smell out of them.” LRH apparently had a nasty aversion to flowery scents, especially “rose perfume,” the book reveals.

    The book’s title plays off Cooper’s supposed code name within Scientology, “Miss Lovely,” which she gained “because she was so beautiful,” Ortega told me. Other citizens have reported being harassed and bullied by Scientology, but nothing to the extent of Paulette Cooper’s story. She’s the first one many people think of when it comes to Scientology’s alleged victims.

    The book is a wallop of a read and Cooper is presented as sympathetic, tragic, and, for a brief bit, unreliable, as she allegedly plots against the Church in her own way. But Ortega also makes some incredible claims that seem to rely upon deep reportage, tracking down people Ortega identifies as long-lost Scientologists and weaving their testimonials into a gripping narrative.

    Another great book for a priority read. I will vouch that Paulette was the most hated person by the scientology crime syndicate in the mid to late 1970s.
    It is not a coincidence that Hubbard persecuted a Holocaust survivor as his tactics and strategies mirror that of Nazis.

    Tony Ortega: From Cal State Fullerton Student to One of Scientology's Best Watchers

    By Gustavo Arellano, OC Weekly, May 13, 2015

    Tony Ortega wants people to attend his book signing this Sunday at the Neighborhood Community Center in Costa Mesa. It's a homecoming for the editor of progressive website the Raw Story--he's a graduate of Savanna High School in Anaheim, lived in Fullerton and Buena Park, and got his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Cal State Fullerton. His book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper, is already receiving rave reviews for its well-written, wonderfully reported narrative about one of the first journalists to take on the controversial religion. Still riding a wave of publicity based on his insightful commentary for the HBO Scientology documentary, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Ortega expects the local appearance (sponsored by the Center for Inquiry Orange County) to be a great one, especially since Paulette Cooper herself will join him.

    But, really, Ortega is more excited about where he and Cooper are going to be Sunday morning, just before their Costa Mesa appearance: at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood.

    "It's two blocks from Big Blue," he says with awe, referring to Scientology's West Coast headquarters. "It's where the FBI raided in 1977 and found the documents that showed Scientology had been harassing Paulette for years. And now, she's going to be there. She's really brave doing this!"

    Doggedly pursuing a story is a trademark of Ortega's; he's an award-winning reporter and editor who spent most of his career working for the chain that owns this infernal rag. He exposed hate groups in Southern California and Phoenix's infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and investigated John Steinbeck's writings. But over the past five years, Ortega has emerged as one of the country's most-read writers about Scientology, frequently breaking news and driving the conversation as the religion has turned from a curiosity into a laughingstock.

    "What attracts me to the story is that they're such bullies, and they get away with it all the time," Ortega says. "They have celebrities and unlimited funds. But a lot of people have left Scientology. They're really good people who join and just wanted to help the world, but they got caught up in this totalitarian organization that makes people's lives terrible if they leave. They push little people around. And that bugs me."

    Ortega was fascinated by Scientology even before becoming a journalist. He remembers the hubbub surrounding the death of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in 1986 while an undergrad at Cal State Fullerton. It was when he was preparing to leave for UC Santa Cruz that he came across an "amazing series" on Scientology by the Los Angeles Times that appeared in 1990. "The Church bought billboards around LA, cherrypicking quotes from those stories," Ortega says. "Because of that, I had a natural sort of interest about what it was all about."

    He wouldn't get a chance to explore the subject until 1995, in his first year with the Phoenix New Times. Reading the Arizona Republic, Ortega came across a letter to the editor by a man attacking the daily for not disclosing his allegations that Scientology had orchestrated a civil lawsuit against him. It turned into Ortega's first cover story, "and one story led to another, one source led to another."

    <snipped>

    After leaving the Voice in 2012, Ortega continued blogging on Scientology at his personal blog, The Underground Bunker. By then, he had gotten the idea for writing a book about Cooper. "What she went through is amazing," Ortega says. "I'm surprised that no one had ever written about it before. I wasn't going to try to compete with Lawrence Wright [who wrote the 2013 best-selling book on which Going Clear was based]. I knew I had to take one story that was real specific. All [of Cooper's ordeals] told me that I thought it was a terrific project."

    Scientology isn't exactly happy with Ortega; asked for comment by the Daily Beast about his book, a church spokesperson called him a "parasite" who used "bigotry and false allegations about the Church of Scientology to create a cottage industry of hate."

    Ortega doesn't mind. People have picketed his previous lectures, and, he says, "I wouldn't be surprised if people take pictures of [him and Cooper]" at the Hollywood and Costa Mesa events. But he remains unfazed.

    "I'm just a beat reporter," the Titan says. "I have a front-row seat to a great story."

    Tony Ortega and Paulette Cooper will speak at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave., Costa Mesa, (714) 327-7525. Sun., 4:30 p.m. $8; students, $4; Center for Skeptical Inquiry members, free.

  21. Good interview from ABC radio, but so many commercials!

    It would be nice to hear the words religion angle or religious cloaking - and maybe even a plug for the Brennan Religious Cloaking statement and video - when an interviewer starts going on about Scientology being a "religion," etc., but I guess that's too much to expect with so little time.

    I just returned from CFI. It was packed house & Tony & Paulette were excellent. In addition to Spanky Taylor, Tory, Larry Anderson, Karen De La Carriere, Jeff Augustine, Lynn Fountain-Campbell, Casper, Graham Berry, Adam 7986, Mark Ebner & wife Michelle, Tony's mother & Paulette's husband were in the audience. Also, were a few suspect OSAbots who were very aloof when approached & spent alot of time text messaging & filming the audience on their iPhones.

    I had a chance to speak to Paulette before she went on stage. She said that over 100 people (standing room only) attended their event in Santa Barbara & that book sales were strong.

    I was given a spot on a raised (but shaky) platform & had to lean against the wall to steady by videocam to the 1.5 hour event. A couple of times I nearly fell off when I started to doze off. The air conditioning did not make it to my side of the room.

    Some interesting tidbits of the event:

    * Paulette positively identified "Jerry Levin" aka Jeff K. Marino from the 1968 photo of him posted on the McClaughery's blog. For legal reasons, Paulette didn't give his real name, but Tony did call him & speak briefly with him. When Jeff Marino heard Tony mention the name 'Paulette Cooper', Marino played the denial game & said he & Tony "did not speak the same language"

    * During the Q & A phase, a man, a self-proclaimed Freezoner, took issue with what he considered Tony's demonization of Scientology, saying he had successfully provided over 5,000 hours of Scientology auditing & that the tech is good & helped people. Tony was quick to respond that Scientologists love to quote their stats (which got applause from the audience) and spoke of the facts of how the cult has & continues to hurt people & families. The Freezoner, clearly, was not pleased with Tony's response.

    * Another man asked Paulette if she signed a settlement with the cult not to talk about Scientology, why was she here today doing just that? Paulette replied that she never said she wouldn't talk about the cult, but that she agreed not to disclose the terms of her settlement with them & she hasn't.

    * Tony said he's been harassed plenty by the cult, but never sued, and that he's very careful before posting an article, often consulting with an attorney, to insure he doesn't publish something that the cult could respond with a lawsuit. Paulette, however, has been sued 19 times.

    * Someone has falsely claimed that Paulette has embellished her story claiming to have been born in the Auschwitz death camp during WWII. Tony & Paulette corrected that mistatement.. Paulette was born 4 days iafter her father was sent to a Nazi death camp.

    After the event, it was selfie time with alot of photos being taken.

    From Karen..

    Just two blocks from Scientology’s LA headquarters, Paulette Cooper shone

    By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, May 18, 2015

    Sunday was a blur. We want to thank the many people who came out to our two appearances with Paulette Cooper in support of our book ‘The Unbreakable Miss Lovely,’ at CFI-West’s Steve Allen Theater on Hollywood Boulevard in the morning and at CFI Orange County’s venue in Costa Mesa in the afternoon.

    In LA, our old friend James Underdown really set us up with an electrifying introduction, and we had to admit to the crowd that our body thetans were tingling as we took the stage.

    The Steve Allen theater has seats for 150 people, but paid attendance, Jim told us, was 175, plus there were some additional folks bringing the place near 200. And it wasn’t just standing-room only, it was an eager crowd who ate up Paulette’s anecdotes and even laughed at our jokes. We got smart questions from the audience, and a couple of questioners challenged us about the efficacy of Scientology, which really made things fun.

    <snipped>

    We get a chance to regroup a bit today. We’re looking forward to seeing video of last night’s show, and we’ll post it when we can find it.

    Leah Remini helps us celebrate our book in Los Angeles with a gang of Scientology ‘SPs’

    By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, May 19, 2015

    Leah_Remini_Tony_Ortega-e1432019216375.jpg

    We’re continuing our book tour in California, but here’s an event that we didn’t publicly advertise — a gathering at the home of Spanky Taylor with many of the folks we’ve written about over the years, as well as some people we’ve only heard about and hope become our sources for new investigations.

    We’ve known Spanky for a long time, well before we appeared with her in Alex Gibney’s documentary, Going Clear. And it isn’t the first time that we’ve attended a gathering at her home. About 15 years ago, she had us over to introduce us to fascinating people who would go on to become sources in our stories, such as former Scientology spy Frank Oliver.

    But this time, in a gathering that was also organized by Tory Christman, the surprise visitor was actress Leah Remini, who dropped by to pick up a copy of our book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, and also to meet the book’s subject, Paulette Cooper.

    We had a nice chat with Leah about her upcoming projects, and we hope we can make some of that public soon.

    No celebrity of her stature has been more outspoken, and I'm very proud of her. Jason Beghe is awesome and speaks plainly about the abuses, but he isn't as famous (yet).

    For top celebrities, it's a delicate tightrope balance to maintain their public persona while simultaneously taking up a controversial cause. She shouldn't be typecast in the role of "Scientology critic" since not only could that hurt her career prospects, but it could also reduce the impact of her message.

    I hope she continues to criticize the Scientology corporation, but it has to be done delicately and in small doses so she can be seen in the public eye as much more than a Scientology critic.

    * * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

    Tony Ortega has been writing incisively about Scientology since 1995 for the Village Voice, Raw Story and elsewhere. (Check out Ortega's excellent 2paragraphs interview from 2014.) His new book is called The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology tried to destroy Paulette Cooper. It's a helluva tale --and a great complement to Going Clear, the Lawrence Wright book that inspired Alex Gibney's harrowing film. (Ortega appears in Gibney's movie.)

    Paulette Cooper, of course, isn't the only person Scientology has tried to break. The church labels people who try to leave it "supressive person(s)" or SPs -- and activates what Ortega calls its "sophisticated revenge apparatus" against them. But that didn't stop former Scientologist Leah Remini -- who's as tough as some of the characters she plays on TV -- from coming out to support Ortega and the unbreakable Cooper at an event for Miss Lovely in Los Angeles. Remini has been admirably fearless since leaving Scientology -- and that doesn't just mean her joyful stint on Dancing With The Stars a few seasons back.

    Scientology’s wealthy donors play royalty in Italy while Paulette Cooper takes San Diego
