COMING IN MAY: A book about Scientology’s most infamous campaign of terror

London-based Silvertail Books is to publish The Unbreakable Miss Lovely by Tony Ortega, the story of the life of author Paulette Cooper, the most famous victim of the Church of Scientology’s notorious and ruthless ‘Fair Game’ retaliation schemes.

Ortega, the former editor-in-chief of The Village Voice, spent two years working with Cooper, interviewing her and reviewing her personal papers, as well as interviewing dozens of people, many of whom have never spoken publicly before, in order to piece together this stunning account of what it can cost someone to unearth Scientology’s secrets.

His sources include witnesses to Cooper’s harassment and, in a few cases, people who took part in it. Those interviews, as well as documents which have never been previously made public, provide the first full telling of what Paulette Cooper experienced — from her childhood in a Nazi concentration camp, to her life as a New York magazine writer, to becoming the most famous target of Scientology’s revenge.

London-based Silvertail Books previously published BBC journalist John Sweeney’s book, The Church of Fear: Inside the Weird World of Scientology, and last year brought Russell Miller’s landmark biography of Scientology’s founder, Bare-Faced Messiah: The True Story of L. Ron Hubbard, back into print for the first time in 27 years.

Silvertail publisher Humfrey Hunter said: “A lot of people have been waiting a long time for Tony Ortega to write a book about Scientology and The Unbreakable Miss Lovely will not disappoint. It is an extraordinary story of terrible things done to a woman who did not deserve them and shines a light into the darkest corner of the history of the Church of Scientology. Tony has done a wonderful job with the narrative – the story reads like a thriller. This is an outstanding work of investigative authorship by a very fine journalist and I’m delighted Silvertail is to be his publisher.”

Tony Ortega has written about Scientology as a journalist for nearly 20 years, and began working with Paulette Cooper about her life story while he was still at the Voice. Ortega appears in Alex Gibney’s HBO-produced documentary about Scientology, Going Clear, which premieres at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on January 25, and he will be in attendance.

Silvertail bought world rights directly from the author and will publish in paperback and ebook in May 2015 in the US and the UK.

Paulette's Scientology nightmare chilled me to the bone. Nothing can be done to right the wrongs done to her. Nevertheless, the downfall of Scientology in a massive public reaction to the revelations in this book would be delicious.

Scientology’s War Against Paulette Cooper with Tony Ortega

Published by TheLipTV on January 15, 2015

The Church of Scientology is known for attacking and intimidating its critics, and one of the most notable victims of their harassment was Paulette Cooper. Cooper’s story of being followed, sued, and even captured by the Church after she exposed them in 1971 is told by journalist Tony Ortega.

The dark secrets and real human cost of going to battle with Scientology is laid bare in this uncensored interview on Media Mayhem, hosted by Allison Hope Weiner.

In the video Tony Ortega reminds us that the Scientology corporation is at its heart a totalitarian political movement whose ultimate aim is to control every single person on earth.

Tony then points out that Paulette Cooper, having just survived the Nazi Holocaust, was attracted to this story in order to warn the public about this group that uses layer upon layer of deception to hide its true nature and ambitions from the public. She wanted the world to know that Scientology was another Nazi-like cult in the making.

  22. Bravo, Tony Ortega!

Great to hear some of the new material laying bare more of the scandal of scientology.

We know the bunch of thugs calling themselves the CoS have no shame, but when the complete story is finally told of all of what they did to Paulette Cooper Noble, perhaps some of the highest-profile celebs will belatedly realise what the rest of us have long known and publicly distance themselves from this disgraceful mob.

All it takes is a bit of backbone.

Jim is helping us set up an entire California swing to start our tour, and we’re still working out the other dates.

Superb. However, I will note, in dogged nit-picky style, that Tony mislabels the Church of Scientology as "the church" 9 times in that brief text. The Church of Scientology is not a church, never was a church, and can never be one (because it would no longer be Scientology if it did).

I know, I know, nobody around here but me cares. *sigh*

That notwithstanding, this book could not be more welcome. I never buy books (got a million freebies online to read, and will already never get to most of them) but I might actually make an exception for this one.

Church of Scientology doesn't bug me too much. That's just short for Church of Scientology International Inc, the corporate name.

Not at all. But, I agree with Tony O highlighting the preferential treatment given by the US government to approved religions, regardless of how illegal it is (re. the repeated court findings that the IRS exemption is just plain illegal).

So, no, the criminal organisation known as the "church" of $cientology is indeed not a church, but in the US they get away with, ahemm, a lot - legally - because they have "church" in the sign above the door. In Europe, not so much, I'm happy to add.

That's not what I meant. Their title is "the Church of Scientology", so that is appropriate; even "the Church" is correct. The title of a certain rock band is "the Rolling Stones", and they are often called "the Stones", yet nobody alleges that they are stones. If someone ever does, I'll pick that nit too. I'm not against brevity, just falsity.

Also, "martianizing"? Is that like womanizing by xenophiles? ^.~

The second major blow comes in the form of a new book by Tony Ortega, which documents the extreme lengths the Church has gone to in order to discredit journalist Paulette Cooper. The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology tried to destroy Paulette Cooper, details the ability of the church to infiltrate government organizations and the personal lives of its critics. Perhaps one of the most outrageous examples being when the church framed Cooper as a suspect in two alleged bomb threats, which resulted in her indictment in 1973 and near inprisonment.

Announcing ‘The Unbreakable Miss Lovely’ tour, including the Jamie DeWolf hijack!

In order to promote the May publication of The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, our book about legendary journalist Paulette Cooper, your proprietor and Paulette will be heading to California for a weeklong tour of appearances next month.

We’ll be kicking things off on Saturday, May 16 at the Santa Barbara Humanist Society. The next day, on May 17, James Underdown at the Center for Inquiry West in Los Angeles will introduce us at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood at 11 am. In the afternoon, we’ll be at the Costa Mesa Community Center as Center for Inquiry Orange County hosts us for its “Feed Your Brain” series at 4:30 pm.

On Friday night, May 22, our tour will be hijacked by Jamie DeWolf, the great-grandson of L. Ron Hubbard, a Bay Area performance artist and frequent subject of the Underground Bunker. The venue is Chez Poulet (The SF Institute of Possibility) at 3359 Cesar Chavez, San Francisco with festivities beginning at 7 pm.

Jamie is a well known local performance artist who puts on some wild extravaganzas. For us, he’s putting on a special macabre evening that should be a pretty singular SF experience. Here’s his description of it:

    THE HOLY SH*T SHOW!

For one night only, the award-winning variety show “Tourettes Without Regrets,” winner of “Best of the Bay” several years running, turns its irreverent eye towards the world of cults and puts Scientology in its center bulls-eye. Hosted by Jamie DeWolf, the comic vaudevillian and great grandson of L. Ron Hubbard himself, the show features an array of cult-related burlesque, stand up comedy, slam poetry, circus arts and audience interactive mayhem where one side of the audience battles the other for comic ‘salvation’ in a series of increasingly deranged contests.

The show features an opening hard-hitting discussion with award-winning journalist Tony Ortega — featured in HBO’s Going Clear — and legendary journalist Paulette Cooper, who wrote one of the first exposes on Scientology in the 1970’s and was subsequently subjected to one of the most brutal wars enacted by the cult, including being framed for bomb threats to the “church.” Prepare for a night of jaw-dropping revelations and boundary-pushing expression that revolves around the absurdity of belief and the danger of the zealot.

Hey, that sounds like a diverting evening. We hope you can join us.

We’re still nailing down a date and location in San Diego for Wednesday, May 20, and we have other dates and times open for other appearances, so please let us know if you’d like to see Paulette Cooper and Tony Ortega talking about Scientology while we’re in the Golden State.
