Ex-cons who are accepted by Scientology seem to tend to be extreme zealots and do whatever is asked of them. I've seen this kind of behaviour before when I was on staff in the 80s-90s.

I don't think this man's performance was impromptu, just my opinion.

I'm saying that a snippet of a guy taking a swipe, then a shaky ass camera and a lot of cussing on the part of Tommy along with TAUNTING for the scilon to actually hit him, then a final chuckle, doesn't help. You ever watch the NBA? It's called "the sell" - a player gets swatted and he's all over the floor looking for a foul call. This is a bad sell, I'm not buying.

Can anyone hear what his attacker is saying? Would love a transcript of it.

The only thing Tommy says is do something over and over. Under the circumstances I don't think anyone could successfully argue that Tommy was doing anything other than standing up for himself. His hands only came up in a defensive mode when attacked. Defensive in the way that boxers take body blows. After the guy walks away Tommy keeps his hands way out opening him up to attack and leaving him venerable and the guy comes back at him a second time.

You add to this the fact that this guy knew Tommy was out there, that there is in fact a side entrance to avoid Tommy and that he charged out the front door directly to Tommy, it could be argued that this was a premeditated assault.

The other thing I love is that in this video Tommy does the same thing to other people who just walk by. It shows that Tommy did not single this guy out for any extra special treatment. Tommy was just protesting as normal.

Let's put it this way: no Scientologist will take this guy to task for doing what he did. He might even get a commendation in his Ethics file, or more signatures on his Liability formula petition ("Deliver an effective blow... ").

But then there's the other downside of it, "bringing bad publicity down on the org."

Not sure which cancels which.

Nah, some HCO or OSA staff got this guy all worked up about Tommy playing "squirreled OT data tapes" and the threat this posed mankind... of course, they could never admit that Tommy was playing the actual OT3 materials.

I've been around the scene a while, and I have never seen Scientology miss an opportunity to hassle a protestor, PR be damned. Forget your history?

My Occam's says that the most simple explanations would involve either potential blackmail of the government by Scientology (xerox copies of the files hidden in yet another secret location); or government footbulletry/internecine/interagency rivalries.
