Phil Jones says his adult children were forced to “disconnect” with him after he and his wife left the religion. The new billboard in Los Angeles urges Jones’ children to “call me.”

A Las Vegas couple trying to reach their Scientologist children erected a billboard in Los Angeles this week urging them simply to “call me.”

Phil and Willie Jones bought the billboard in an attempt to reach their adult son and daughter, Mike Jones, 42, and Emily Jones, 38. Phil said his children work for the church in Los Angeles and have been prohibited from speaking with their parents.

Phil told BuzzFeed News that for years, the entire family participated in Scientology. But eventually, he and Willie began drifting away, finally severing ties with the religion four or five years ago. When that happened, they were cut off from their friends, family, and children who stayed with the church.
“We knew that in Scientology, if you speak out all your family and friends have to disconnect from you,” he said.

It has been years since the family was all together.

Phil said it has been three or four years since he has seen Mike and Emily. A few months ago he had a brief phone conversation with Mike, who, according to Phil, ended the conversation by saying, “I never want to talk to you again.” Phil added that Emily got married last year, but “we weren’t invited, we weren’t told. I only found out through the grapevine.”

“They’ve been poisoned against us, they’ve been convinced that we are evil and trying to destroy the world,” Phil added. “They’ve been worked on and there’s definitely a mental conditioning.”

Representatives for Scientology did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment Wednesday.

Phil and Willie Jones and their billboard have really hit the big time. Expect to see them on both the Today Show on NBC and Good Morning America on ABC this morning.

Yesterday, we sat back and let our commenters report on the action happening in Los Angeles as the billboard, which we reported had gone up on Monday morning, attracted a gaggle of television teams to film the dedication ceremony. We asked Phil at the end of the day if he would send us some thoughts about how it had gone. He sent us the following, and we’re also grateful to several Bunker readers who supplied us with photos.

Wednesday was ‘Billboard Dedication Day.’ It turned out to be a lot more than we possibly could have imagined. Since the billboard went up on Monday we figured it would be a bit low key on Wednesday, with maybe 5 or 10 people, and if we were lucky a news crew or two.

When I woke up in the morning the phone was ringing, emails flying, and texts a-texting. We got down to the billboard site an hour early to get situated and the phone kept on going. When there was a short lull we jumped out of the car (OK, no jumping for me. Creaky old man climbed out of the car) and walked over to a spot with a good view of the billboard.

We started off with an on-camera interview with ABC’s 20/20. They asked some great questions and were very nice. As soon as that one was over a gentleman asked if we’d move across the street to the (wide) median. I was amazed to see a whole bunch of news people there with cameras and mics waiting for us. Rather than do individual interviews they set it up as a media scrum. I have no idea how many there were. Looked like somewhere between 5 and 10 cameras.

“To my loved one in Scientology...Call me,” the giant ad reads. It doesn’t name the Jones children, Mike and Emily, personally, but their parents hope they’ll get the message regardless.

The church encourages its members to cut off all communication with people who don’t follow the religion, Willie and Phil Jones told ABC 7.

Parents Phil and Willie Jones are former Scientologists

They had been at the church for 40 years and their children had grown up there

They have since left and become outspoken critics of the organisation

But their children - now adults - remain there and are believed to be tied into a billion year contract with the church's Sea Organization

The billboard is the parents' last ditch attempt to reach them after countless failed attempts

They have raised $13,917 so far on GoFundMe in support of their project

An LA couple have spent over $8,000 on a billboard advert in central Los Angeles in a desperate plea to reach their children who they say have been 'lost' to Scientology.

Former Scientologists Phil and Willie Jones have had very limited contact with their son and daughter for years and the advert is a last ditch attempt to reach out to them from behind closed walls.

The billboard was erected on Glendale Blvd in Echo Park Monday after two Billboard companies pulled out of the contract last minute.

It reads: 'To my loved one in Scientology...call me' against a backdrop of hundreds of family photos of those who have been affected by the church's 'disconnection' program.

Former Scientologists Phil and Willie Jones (left and right) have not had contact with their son and daughter for years

Their children - Mike and Emily (left and right) - chose to stay at the controversial church and cut all ties with their parents

Their attempt to make contact is a direct attack on the church's 'disconnection program', which seeks to cut contact between a practicing Scientologist and any person who is deemed 'suppressive' or 'antagonistic' towards their 'spiritual journey'

Phil and Willie Jones haven’t had contact with their Scientologist children in more than two years — and they are desperate to reach them. In a bid to make contact, the ex–Scientology members erected a giant billboard begging their son, Mike, and daughter, Emily, to give them a call.

Unveiled on Monday, April 4, the sign hangs in Los Angeles’ Echo Park neighborhood, and takes aim at the Church’s alleged policy of disconnection, which some have claimed requires members to cut off all contact from former members. (Scientology’s website states, “There is no policy in Scientology that requires Church members to disconnect from anyone, let alone family and friends who simply have different beliefs.”)

The billboard reads, “to my loved one in Scientology … call me. StopScientologyDisconnection.com .”

Phil and Willie were members of the church for more than 40 years. When they left, they were labeled "Suppressive People." During an interview with Today on Thursday, April 7, the heartbroken father of two cried remembering his last phone conversation with his son. “[He said], I never want to talk to you,” Phil recalled. “But that’s what they do. It’s a cruel and vindictive organization to do something like that.”

Speaking into Today’s camera, Willie made an emotional plea for her kids to get in touch. “We love you guys so much, and miss you so much,” she said. Added Phil, “And we won’t stop fighting for you, ever, ever.”

Thank you, Phil and Willie. No apology is necessary for your spectacular move in putting up the billboard. Every one there was happy for the media exposure that you garnered. It wasn't as spectacular as the helicopter stunt at the opening of the Flag building in Clearwater, but that was only seen by a relatively few people, and was directed more at Miscavige.

Your move, in setting up the billboard, will reach a far larger segment of the population. It attacks what is probably the most egregious policy of $cientology, and there's no way that they can get out of it, except to attack you or to try to change the subject.

The location of the billboard is spectacular. At first, some people thought it was out of the way, being about 2 miles from Big Blue, but the billboard is positioned perfectly for hundreds of thousands of people to see it because when they come down off of the end of the Glendale freeway, it's straight ahead of them, and the size of the message, "Call Me" is easy to read.

Late last night and early this morning, I posted my impressions of what went on both at your interviews and later.

I apologize if I left someone out. Everyone, please correct me if I've made mistakes. Here's what I posted.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a late report about the billboard.

I planned to get there early and I came driving down the 2, also called Glendale Freeway which ends by emptying on Glendale Boulevard. What I expected to see was the billboard off to the right. But as soon as I got on to Glendale Boulevard it was directly ahead. It was the only thing that I could see.

My immediate thought was, FUCKING AWESOME!!!!. The billboard is framed by trees on the left in the median and on the right by the edge of the street. The reason is that Glendale Boulevard heads straight towards the sign, then just about a hundred feet before one comes up on the sign, it takes a slight jog to the left.

The sign appears right atop Al's cycle shop. You cannot miss it, especially because there are two traffic lights on Glendale Boulevard that make the traffic stop and go. It is inevitable because going from a freeway to a City Street immediately brings about congestion. The rush hour was over, but I hung around from about 9:45 until 1 pm, and the traffic was always stop and go. Phil and Willie pic a beautiful spot. I think that it will actually get more people to look at it then would happen on Hollywood Boulevard.

When I got there, about 10 minutes until 10 a.m., there were already some TV trucks there as well as the documentary crew that is covering Phil and Willie. They were interviewing them on the other side of the street. The other TV Crews started to set up on the wide median just across from the sign, which is a beautiful place to see the sign from, but it doesn't work for cars going by when they get that close. The TV crews wanted to get the money shot of the sign for their audience. Eventually, there were crews from KNBC Channel 4, KCBS Channel 2, KABC Channel 7, and KTLA Channel 5. There could also be a crew from Las Vegas, but I couldn't identify them. They were all interviewing Phil and Willie as well as shooting the surroundings. Another person who was being interviewed was Jamie DeWolf, Hubbards great grandson and excellent performer.

As time went on, more and more people showed up, Some were from the bunker, like myself and Science Doc, but a number of Exes showed up, too.

One person I talked to, had been here in the US illegally years ago when he was recruited for the sea org, and ended up being a janitor for little to no pay. He is now a legal resident, but this is long after leaving the sea org. He told me that he decided he did not want to be a slave, so he left. He was rejoicing at the billboard.

Fred Hansey and Science Doc and SucculentDuck were a part of the contingency.

I'm losing my internet connection, so I'll post more in a couple of hours when I get home.

    TEASER

The cops show up (because of all the news vans) and I brought Tory Christman by later in the afternoon. Tory scored!

More on the billboard story .

In a brilliant stroke of genius, Always Amazed showed up with a large poster of her son with the (IIRC) words, "Have you seen this person?" That got the reporter's attention so she was interviewed by several people. Another person there was Dave Sweetland (sp?). I believe he got interviewed by at least one person because of his story of disconnection from his entire family because he left Scientology. His wife at the time divorced him. He has not talked to his children since, or ever seen his grandchildren.

I apologize for not taking pictures, but I was having too much fun and enjoying the moment. There was a crowd on the 15 foot (5 meter) wide median because there were so many cameras, tripods, assistants, and sound men in addition to all of us as SPs.

When some LAPD officers showed up, my paranoid thinking gave me the thought that $cientology had called them on us. When I finally got to talk to the senior officer, I found out that she was there because there were so many TV trucks around, and she likes to know what is going on in her area of responsibility. She was curious about what was going on, and made sure that we were not bothering traffic, or stepping into the street to talk to motorists as they were passing by in the stop-and-go traffic. LAPD had not been called by anyone.

I talked to the officer over a period of time, because she was answering texts that were from her Watch Commander and other officers who wanted to see pictures of the billboard. I think she was having fun explaining to them what was going on. I gave her a lot of background on disconnection, as well as Scientology black PR, and some of the tactics used in fair game. She really was interested, and I referred her to the Bunker and other sites.

Tory Christman was not able to make it that morning, but I offered to drive her there in the late afternoon so she could see it and take pictures of the billboard. As we got off the freeway, it turned out that we ended up behind a tall truck, so she could not see the billboard right away. I slowed down and she finally caught sight of it, and tried to take pictures. We had some pissed-off motorists behind us because we were slowing down traffic. That is a mortal sin in Los Angeles. If OJ had been tried for slowing down traffic in the slow speed chase in the Bronco, he would have been hung. Murder is considered as a lesser offense.

Unfortunately, her camera didn't take the pictures. We then looped around to come back down a second time. Tory was quite impressed with the visibility of the sign. Cars in traffic that is stop and go like that can't help but see the sign. It is directly in front of them.

When we looped around, we noticed that there was a TV van from KTLA Channel 5 parked up the street next to the Jack in the Box restaurant. Tori decided that we should go over and talk to them. We parked close by, and Tory hobbled out to the driver's side, where there was someone sitting. ( Tory broke her ankle New Year's Day, and she is in a walking cast.)

We went up to the window and asked what they were doing. The driver, who I think was probably the cameraman, explained that they were getting set up for a live shot regarding the billboard on the 6 o'clock evening news. Tory engaged him and explained that she was in Scientology for 30 years, and told about her disconnection experience and other information about $cientology. She did such a great job, that the reporter who was in the back of the van asked for her contact information. They were there only to go live for the introductory piece on the billboard.

Tory really knows how to do PR. I caught on that she was doing such a great job, that I shut up and just let her go.

I want to urge everyone who has a disconnection story to contact the TV station or news outlet and let them know your story, because OSA will be having people call in to object to the story or to say it's false. The more of you who talk about your experiences the better it is. I'm calling for backup. Make your story short, sweet, and concise. News people like a good story. Disconnection is a big one.

I believe that Tori posted a picture of the billboard, but unfortunately we were so close that most of the picture is taken up with the motorcycle shop underneath and the bottom line is covered up. There will be hundreds of thousands of people who will be seeing that billboard every day. Way to go Willie and Phil!

    KTLA Channel 5 broadcast

Tory Christman and I hurried back to her house to catch the six o'clock News segment on the billboard. Sure enough, early in the broadcast there was a teaser for it. When they finally went to the segment, they went live to the reporter on site with the billboard, who then introduced the interview with Willie and Phil that they had shot in the morning. It seemed the anchors back at the station were impressed. They ended the segment with a statement that they had reached out to the Church of Scientology but Scientology had not replied.

    Scientology did not look good.

Hollywood's Anti-Scientology Billboard: Couple Says "We Lost Our Kids" to "Brainwashing"

The Joneses want to speak to their two adult children, Mike, 42, and Emily, 38, whom they say they've lost all contact with through a process knows within the Church of Scientology as "disconnection."

Since erecting a billboard near Dodger Stadium on Monday, April 4, Phil and Willie Jones, a 60-something married couple from Las Vegas, have drawn a great deal of media interest — including an appearances on Today — to a deeply personal cause. The Joneses want to speak to their two adult children, Mike, 42, and Emily, 38, whom they say they've lost all contact with through a process knows within the Church of Scientology as "disconnection." The family was once deeply enmeshed in the organization, but the parents began to have doubts about it five years ago, whereupon Phil's sister, also a Scientologist, allegedly reported them to church leaders. They were swiftly excommunicated and communication with their children immediately reduced to a trickle, the Joneses say, and have neither seen nor heard from either for over two years. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Phil Jones about his "Call Me" billboard campaign.

How did you choose the location for your billboard?

When Willie and I were leaving L.A. yesterday we saw for ourselves immediately the impact the press was having on all of this. As we were checking out of the hotel the manager came out of his office to talk to us. He had seen us on TV and wanted to offer his support. He said several times, "I had no idea this was going on". At the restaurant almost the same exact thing happened. The manager of the restaurant came over to us to offer his condolences and support.

People need to know about this abusive practice. We 'watchers' are well versed in what is going on. Now it's time to really shine the light on Scientology abuses to more and more people, and I thank Brian for adding his story to the mix.

    Billboard Update:

We have just secured a second month with the billboard and are well into having our third month covered. The current target amount on the campaign of $17.5k will cover the third month plus a bit. I'm working to secure the billboard through to the end of August. For that we need to increase our target amount to $24,000. That is nearly $10,000 from where we are but since these billboards get booked up pretty fast I'd like to book out and pay for as long as we can. I've secured it up to next Friday (April 15th) so whatever we get to at that point money wise I'll contract and pay for however many months we can with the billboard company.

Thanks to everyone so far for your support on this. We'll keep this billboard up for as long as we can.

Considering that in 2008 people thought nothing of dropping $5 grand for a block of OT auditing (12-1/2 hours) I don't think it's too much to ask former homo novis to contribute a hundred towards the billboard.

  24. Stop Scientology Disconnection billboard project Update No. 9.

    https://www.gofundme.com/reconnectingfamily

    * * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

Scientology buys ‘.org’ and ‘.net’ sites to battle anti-disconnection billboard in Los Angeles

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, April 9, 2016

Twice, the Church of Scientology managed to head off Phil and Willie Jones as they attempted to get a billboard put up in Los Angeles about the organization’s toxic “disconnection” policy. The couple, former church members who live in Las Vegas, signed contracts with Outfront Media and Regency Outdoor, but both caved to pressure from Scientology and rescinded the contracts at the last minute.

Phil and Willie pressed ahead, and found a third company that was willing to post their message on a billboard in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles. The billboard was put up Monday morning, and then a media frenzy descended on the couple as they held a dedication ceremony on Wednesday. The billboard simply asks Scientologists to call their loved ones, in defiance of disconnection.

And now, we learn that Scientology had a backup plan while it was trying to keep the billboard from going up. Phil and Willie’s billboard directs people to a website they set up to discuss disconnection. Its URL is StopScientologyDisconnection.com. But last night, Phil realized that Scientology has bought up the same URL — with the suffixes .org and .net — in order to catch web surfers who type in the wrong thing.

Although the ownership of the alternate sites is hidden behind a proxy, the content of the websites makes it clear that it’s Scientology who owns them — they link to the main scientology.org mothership. Both website domains were purchased late in the evening of February 29 — the day the billboard reached its funding goal after we first posted news about the project and our readers helped raise the first $10,000.

The Scientology site mimics the style of the Jones billboard, as you can see above, with portraits of Scientologists and, instead of “Call me,” the words “Meet us.”

Clicking on the portraits takes you to a page at the scientology.org site where you can watch video testimonials that Scientology began making in 2009.

Clicking on the “What is Disconnection” header takes you to a page at scientology.org that lays out Scientology’s argument that disconnection is voluntary, and a sensible thing to do in the face of antagonism from someone.

But hundreds of Scientologists who have left the organization in recent years tell us that disconnection is a ruthless tool used to enforce discipline. If you fall afoul of leader David Miscavige and his dictatorial rule, you may find your family ripped apart as the church demands that members cut off all ties from a person declared “suppressive.”

The examples are voluminous, but one of the best was the document that Sara Goldberg presented to Tampa Bay Times reporter Joe Childs, and then to documentary maker Alex Gibney for his film Going Clear.

    THE BILLBOARD TIMELINE

January 31: We reveal that Phil Jones — known as “Sid” here in the Bunker — has been working with a TV production company while he tries to reach his disconnected kids.

February 28: We post a notice about Phil’s GoFundMe page to raise money for the billboard. When the story hits at 7 am, there is $70 in the kitty.

February 29: Less than 24 hours after we posted the notice, our readers have helped surpass the original goal of $8,200 — the billboard is funded.

March 2: Phil announces that he’s signed a three-month contract with Outfront Media for the billboard, and he tells us that he’s thinking of having some kind of dedication event.

March 5: Outfront Media’s New York office cancels the contract that its Los Angeles office had signed. Phil vows to find another company.

March 9: Phil tells us that Regency Outdoor has signed a contract and the billboard will be on Hollywood Blvd, just a block from David Miscavige’s personal office and residence.

March 12: We identify Scientology’s media buyer who is trying to derail the billboard.

March 15: Regency Outdoor now caves as well in the face of the pressure being put on by Scientology.

April 4: Lamar Media puts up the billboard on Glendale Avenue in Echo Park.

April 6 is the Wednesday when Phil and Willie hold their dedication ceremony and the press shows up in droves.

I hope what the COS has done as far as buying the other domains is also covered by the media in huge way.
I was shocked and sad to read that those domains were not purchased along with the first one. :(

As far as the bumper stickers and t shirts go, they are great for protests! :p
But I would never put that on a car in fear of retaliation or vandalism. Either from a clam OR from someone who hates Scientology.
I think putting that on your car makes it look like you ARE or WERE a Scientologist to the general public. IMO

This is Photojournalist Fred G. Haseney with his eye on scientology. For today’s blog, I’ve strayed from the Pacific Area Command Base (“PAC Base” or “Big Blue”), the church of scientology’s West Coast headquarters. Instead of being needlessly and persistently followed by Sea Org members parading as Security Guards on bicycles, I’ve gone to Glendale Blvd. for the official “Call Me” billboard unveiling and press conference for Phil and Willie Jones. Today’s blog is for Wednesday, April 6, 2016, and is part of the “Reconnecting the Disconnected and Declared” series.
