Several years ago I actually had a psychiatrist (an MD) suggest I look into a weekend seminar from Landmark Forum. He thought it might be beneficial for me. I had never heard of it but googled it when I returned home. When I saw the relationship between it and EST and its relationship to Scientology I was shocked that this Dr, a psychiatrist no less, would suggest such a scam to a patient. Never went back to that Dr, though part of me wanted to just to ask him what the hell was he thinking.

It indicates that even some mental health professionals can be duped and suckered by scam groups. If he recommended The Forum to me as a patient, I would have reported him to the state licensing board/provincial college of physicians for possible malpractice.

As someone who took a couple of the Landmark courses and read about both Landmark and Scientology, it seems to me that Landmark has NOTHING to do with Scientology. Scientology is a religion--Landmark Education offers personal seminars that millions of people take and then are done with--There's nothing to join.

I am in complete agreement with you, EST and Forum are very different than Scientology. The EST and Forum training are not something for someone to believe in and obey by. It is a way/ a method to observe ourselves and others in order to experience breakthroughs and break away from old unhealthy emotional patterns. It changed me for the better and I never look back. Much gratitude to Werner Erhard for his courage and clarity to put the work out there for whoever is ready to experience the breakthroughs and break away from co-dependency.

Werner Erhard came along and wound up collecting, embodying, and presenting a bunch of esoteric, psychological philosophical ideas, notions and practices and found a way to put them altogether and make them useful to a whole bunch of people. Some of the terms came from Scientology allegedly, like the term "clearing", which was just a damn good term for what they were trying to say (if one embraces that kind of looking/thinking and no if one does not).
Yes you can call Warhol, Pollock and a handful of others "frauds" and label their activities "garbage", and no one owes any artist any recognition, but the fact remains that they are recognized by many as having made a substantial contribution to the world or art. Same with Erhard, no one owes him anything but many credit him with having been useful to them.

EST/The Forum/Landmark Education is a scientology spin-off group. John Rosenberg, who changed his name to Werner Erhard, was a scientologist. True that they don't pretend to be a religion like scientology.
