Satellite Imaging To Estimate the Size of the Tehran Protests

Discussion in 'Promote The Cause' started by Unregistered, Jun 19, 2009.

  1. I have seen estimates for the size of protests in the last 6 days range from "tens of thousands" to "over a million" for yesterday's march. Tomorrow seems to indeed be the defining showdown.

Does anyone know if any of the main satellite imaging companies have been contacted as to provide images of Tehran from space? This would provide the clearest way--absent helicopters, which are obviously out the question--of getting an accurate headcount.

I have seen satellite companies release photos of current events before (For example, for the Obama inauguration and of the California wildfires.)

I also know that Google owns Keyhole, which though isn't a satellite imaging company itself, I would imagine gives it some pull. I bring this up only because Google's release of its Farsi translator seems to indicate that they're an ally in this cause.

If anyone knows what effort can be made--or who should be contacted---as to inquire about this, I think it'd be a great tool to have.

I've heard news that Google will be updating their Google Earth images. This may help with the estimation - need to find link to the source again.
  3. That's going to require that there was a commercial imaging satellite over Tehran at the right time of day to have seen the protest - which might be iffy as any particular point on the Earth is only imaged once every few days.
