Write to school and public health officials.

    To school board members

I am writing to ask what the xxxxxx Public Schools plans for anti-rape education. Rape is a form of bullying and should be included in anti-bullying education.
In other schools there have been high profile cases including rape by classmates at off-school parties followed by suicide of rape victims. Bullying occurs at schools including pictures of rape in progress being sent by phone (child pornography)
In some cases school officials have punished the victim with exclusion from school activities, or known of the rape and not reported it.
Education for both students and teachers is important.
As a parent and a public health volunteer I ask you to address this problem before it happens here.
I look forward to discussing it with you.

    To public health officials:

Does XXX County have anti-rape education for school children and teachers? Rape is bullying. Humiliating the victim at school and passing around pictures of the rape in progress is bullying and child pornography.
There are high profile cases of rape by classmates at off-school parties followed by suicide of rape victims.

In some cases school officials have punished the victim with exclusion from school activities, or known of the rape and not reported it. There are cases of county officials interfering with investigations.
Public health departments can help with education programs for teachers and children.
I'd like to help with this.

We can be proactive- contact the schools in your area and tell them they ned very good anti-rape, anti-bullying education for students AND TEACHERS. I've got some interesting replies. The education specialist in the local high school ran down the education given in the Health course. Then he paused when it came to anti-bullying and said they covered "intimidation"in Health but not as it relates to rape. Bet enduvation will be a bit different next year if the issues get raised again and again. Also teacher education- call or write NEA or State school department.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT at school is unwanted and unwelcomed behavior of a sexual nature that interferes with a student’s rights to receive an equal educational opportunity.
They need to expand this and have a specific module on rape culture and reporting problems.

After one letter to one school board member and one phone call to the teacher in charge of the "Health" , there has been a constant dialog with other board members and teachers. All I did was discuss rape culture and point out "Refusal Skills" were not the answer to the problem of rape in school age children.
    Wow. It works.

yeah? good. tell us more? are they actually having a re-think?

Great! Guess they weren't totally committed to the "Refusal Skills" idea if they changed their mind with your rational reasoning and valid points. Goes to show that reasoning does in fact work on people especially in situations like this.

Yes a re-think. I'll keep on it. Interesting one email kicked off the description of what programs they have and they are having conversations about what to change. Steubenville did some good, intelligent schools don't want a repeat.
