Press release draft for Global Petition Against COS

Hi all. Need a hand tidying this up. It's an idea that the UK is running with, New Zealand too, and others have been very keen. Would like to sort this press release out and then give everyone the Dox and info they need via another post.

    Please read and help :)

Anonymous Activists Launch Global Petition Against the Church of Scientology

On April 12th 2008, the loose collective of grass-roots internet activists known as "Anonymous" will launch a global petition aimed at the removal of the tax exempt status enjoyed by the Church of Scientology. This global petition is timed to coincide with the next round of demonstrations and will run for several months.

Protesters all over the world will be inviting members of the public to sign petitions calling for an investigation into the Church of Scientology's tax status in their country. In the US the details of the agreement between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Scientology are secret and not open to the public. Uniquely, this arrangement allows US Scientologists to gain a tax free Scientology education, a privilege not available to the parishioners of any other religion.

In many countries, Scientology enjoys the tax benefits of a charity and yet Scientology seems to produce no charitable outcomes for the societies it operates in. Anonymous want to draw the public's attention to this paradox and to ask the Government to investigate whether it is appropriate for this privileged status to be given to the Church of Scientology.

Anonymous believes that members of the public would also like to see Scientology investigated. Therefore, Anonymous invites the public to sign in protest against the Church of Scientology tax privileges on April 12 and on future protest dates.

Yay for getting this off the ground! Looks like a good start; have you linked to this post in the other petition threads? I've gone through it briefly; italicised bits are things I think need improving.

I think we had a better term for anonymous somewhere; a loose collective of grassroots internet activists? You've hit the five Ws in that first paragraph; good! Reformation might be a better word, or maybe something more strongly worded.

Not sure about the quotes around Church.

Maybe just "not open/available to the public"

Insert something about the religious education stuff, when the US anons write their version they might want to expand on this and mention the IRS lawsuits, Operation Snow White etc.

Rhetorical questions are bad, I have been told. Maybe this:

Looks goooood, nice work Team Anon! :D

It can be edited by local anons to add the relevant tax details for their country when they send it out. Forex in NZ we can add a line about CoS being granted tax exemption in 2001, the lack of evidence that they're actually doing any beneficial charitable work, and the window of opportunity we have to ask the charities commission to throughly investigate them before deciding whether to allow them to retain their tax exempt charitable status.

One small nitpick about the final wording:
In many countries, Scientology enjoys the tax benefits due a charity and yet Scientology seems to produce no charitable outcomes for the societies it operates in.

'due a charity' reads slightly awkwardly; change to 'of a charity' or 'as a charity,' viz

In many countries, Scientology enjoys the tax benefits of a charity and yet Scientology seems to produce no charitable outcomes for the societies it operates in.

Maybe even made the wording a bit stronger and say 'Scientology produces no charitable outcomes.'

/nitpicking, I will save it for the NZ one

    Nice work!:applause:
