I don't know why I didn't post these before. Or did I? T-shirts from Golden Ear. This was first thing in the morning, before we herded them down the road and into their stuffy (non-air-conditioned) little "gallery."

Oh, cheer up. Regardless of her little "warning", because she mentioned it, those videos are going to get some new hits. Who knows what'll happen when they see it, if we're lucky, it'll make someone think. For once.

Well, we say that we test "for" various conditions in medicine. But that's a short-hand for something quite different.

In all of medicine including psychiatry, we listen to a description of the problem, and from that we develop a mental list of possible causes. Then we systematically rule-out diagnoses on the list until we're left with the best one.

We ask questions, examine body parts, and order labs to rule out diagnoses. We diagnose someone with essential hypertension after we've ruled-out other causes of elevated blood pressure readings, such as anxiety, pheochromocytoma, vascular disease, etc.

We diagnose depression after we've ruled out hypothyroidism, anemia, chronic inflammatory conditions, etc.

We diagnose a psychotic episode after we've ruled out CNS depressant withdrawal, brain tumor, insulin reaction, hallucinogen intoxication, etc.

There is likely an interesting assumption underneath the Scientologist's assertion that there is no test for any psychiatric condition: dualism. Get that on the table, and the debate is over.
