Seems like the Portland PD are getting nice little training exercise for learning that Scientology is not to be trusted. This may prove useful at later protests.

Nice try, but no one said they deserved it.

Godeka was likely mentally unstable from the start, and Scientology's use of Hubbard's mental quackery certainly didn't help, and probably made it worse. This is why unqualified people using bullshit tech shouldn't be practicing medicine without a license.

The scientology crime syndicate likes to cloak itself with the "freedom of religion" part of the First Amendment, but despises the "freedom of speech" part of it.

Other ones may learn something from him.

How did the Scientologists find out that WBM was going to be filming?

A big fat bearded man with a camera is a bit of a giveaway. What I could see in the video in terms of their preventative measures looked highly improvised, and I don't think they had prepared anything in advance imo.

I just remembered that this happened to us in maybe 1998? WBM and I were on the roof across the street from the Celebrity Center videotaping the event. We had been invited into the building by one of the renters. A Scientology security dude happened to look up and I think he saw the red "on" light on WBM's camera. suddenly they started running around and pointing up at us. eventually the manager of the apartment told us to get off the roof. Bummer.

Having read some more accounts, including some informed by Bunker himself, it does appear that the cult had intimidated a building owner to prevent him filming from his originally planned spot. I retract my comment quoted above.
  17. Anonymous Member

Perhaps I read it wrong, but did Tony Ortega report that WBM had permission to film the day before the opening?

Here are the article's last two paragraphs:

Scientology has been creating their victims and, consequently, their enemies for over 60 years. Thanks to Anonymous, it finally became safe to talk about it, document it and finally, finally, bring Scientology to the attention of the law and the courts.

The Church of Scientology is very, very frightened. That was never more apparent than today, at Scientology’s small “grand” opening of their latest fortress against justice, truth and the very community they claim they want to help.

  22. A wonderful article that is just spot on.

"If you were not a known Scientologist, you were most unwelcome. Even if you were just curious and only wanted to know what was going on — you were not welcome.
As Bill likes to say, compare Scientology with how a normal organization or a normal church would carry out their Grand Opening. The whole community would be invited. Everyone would be welcome. A normal organization or church would want everyone to show up, participate and feel welcome.
Scientology demands that “All you people stay the hell out of our building""

This is it. How can they possibly ever gain new recruits with this attitude. They can't. This show is for the last surviving members and true believers before they are bled dry.

If WBM had been allowed to film David Miscavige, the Scientology corporation's CEO, without incident, it would have been a mildly interesting addition to his film. But having him capture the cult's bizarre fair game policy in action once again is pure moviemaking gold.

PORTLAND LIVE: Mark Bunker at Scientology’s “Ideal Org” Event

We’re very disappointed to learn that Mark Bunker was prevented from filming today’s Ideal Org event from what appeared to be the perfect perch.
Yesterday, Bunker had sent us a photo from the window he had arranged to film the event. He had secured permission from the owner of the building, which houses the outdoors goods store across the street from the Scientology building.
But today, as he arrived with his equipment, he was greeted by Scientology operatives and a number of Portland police officers. The officers told Bunker he had every right to film from the location — but the owner, Bunker says, had been so intimidated by Scientology employees, he had rescinded Bunker’s permission.

WBM: “I taped his entire speech. Whether it’s any good, I can’t really tell. Whether the audio is salvageable, I’ll find out when I’m back at the hotel. But I got something, and that’s more than they wanted me to get.”

The opening of the Ideal Org was quite an interesting one to protest. Me and a group are part of the Operation Clambake protests, from 2008 and on, and stopped protesting in 2010, I believe. We were a small group, about five initially that grew and fluctuated. We were harassed and bothered by Handlers, OT7's. You can see them all on Tony's page.

Everyone kept their cool. The event went as planned. Minute the permit expired to restrict foot traffic, we moved in and continued protesting hard. We got a lot of people informed, and a lot of business cards handed out. The members that were there talked about rebooting the protests to prevent Portland, OR from becoming The "First Scientology City". Lots and lots of residents were burdened and bothered by their new neighbors, and looked to us for answers and ways to help.

I just got back. I managed to get up onto a parking garage opposite of Mark's position with a view down on the audience. The shot will give an accurate count of the audience, which was about 400 - 450. I'll have a more exact count soon. They had assigned me my very own OSA tail but he was laughably easy to shake.
They literally cordoned off nine blocks of downtown Portland and allowed no pedestrian traffic during the event. And believe me, this pissed off the locals mightily. I heard nothing but negative comments. What a great way to arrive in their new building that is supposed to "serve Portland" - with a super-sekrit event and a lot of rent-a-cops and private security and stone-faced OSA operatives. Nicely done, Scientology.
One bit of irony, the Gold shoot crew was shooting from the roof of a gay bar.

So did Tony Ortega post the picture the day before the event and tip off the Scientologists?
  34. Random side note - we protested today in Chicago and we saw most of the usual staff crew at our building, including many of the most gung-ho zealots. So that must have meant that they didn't bus or fly Chicago Scientologists en masse all the way out to Portland for their grand opening. That would sort of give hints about a lower-than-usual turnout for an Ideal Org grand opening. (Sounds like they apparently had ~450, and usually they're closer to 1,000.)

We know they usually push hard to have as many Scientologists possible be there at the openings, be it by chartered buses or whatever. I'm sure most of the attendees are somewhat local, but I can remember seeing a video years ago of a known L.A. Sea Orger (Fronk) all the way out in Quebec City (?) for their Ideal Org opening. So I guess traveling great distances was at one time not an insurmountable obstacle for them. Maybe they just don't bother for the non-Sea Orgers, or don't travel so far for whatever reason - low on money, time, or just tired of all the events.

Whatever the reason, (most) Chicago Scientologists weren't there.

I thought that the podium area looked much more tickytacky than in previous openings. Funds drying up?

Even better, they didn't save it for any other use. They just tore it apart and threw it all away. It looked nice.

CoS supposedly closed a large area on a filming permit. O RLY...

    http://www.pdc.us/portland-film-office/filming-in-portland/city-permits-guildlines.aspx

    Did they do this?
Did they notify anyone? Did their barricades list the production company and the permit # for filming?

From Jeff's video, it looks like a max of 450 - 500 people at the event. Probably most of those (85%) were staff members ordered to attend and bussed in from the LA/SF/Seattle area. Or they may have been all the RPFers, dressed up for a day.

This looks like a complete non-event or FAILURE.

Remember the cash quotas mandated by Austin Nickels memo? Like 200K from each org: Austin, Kansas City, San Diego, MV, SLC, Seattle, SF Valley, etc.... Yeah, well, no one else remembered them either. I hope Austin got the heck out of Dodge before today, or else he's history.

There was such a build up to this event, the repercussions for failure will be huge. What's beyond desperation? Not sure, but betting we will find out very shortly.

Actually, they did follow permit procedure thoroughly. They also paid the businesses off for the time. From the looks of everything, they followed permit procedures to the key. The police also agreed with out.
