BREAKING: State and county officials raided the Scientology drug rehab center in the Atlanta area -- Narconon Georgia -- and hauled away computers and boxes of records, Pete Combs of WSB radio just revealed. The raid is part of a state investigation into insurance fraud at the facility.

Narconon under investigation again | WSB Radio

    By Pete Combs

The Scientology-linked drug rehabilitation program known as Narconon of Georgia is again in trouble with the law. This time, agents from the Georgia Insurance Commissioner’s office and Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter are looking for evidence of insurance fraud.

Armed with a search warrant, half a dozen agents, accompanied by two Gwinnett County Police officers, searched the Narconon offices in Norcross, questioning employees as they showed up for work and hauling away more than a dozen computers and boxes full of documents.

Investigators raid Narconon of Georgia | WSB TV

State investigators have raided Narconon Georgia, a Scientology-linked nonprofit rehab program facing numerous complaints.

Channel 2 investigative reporter Jodie Fleischer was there Friday as investigators hauled away nearly two dozen computer hard drives and laptops. There were so many boxes of financial paperwork that authorities rented a U-Haul van to remove them from the Norcross facility.

The investigation was launched after Channel 2 Action News brought the case of a former patient to the state insurance commissioner earlier this year. The family of Emily Morten said they paid in full for her to participate in the program, only to find out months later that Narconon had billed the family’s insurance company $166,000 for treatment she didn’t receive.

Friday’s raid involved the state Insurance Commissioner’s fraud investigators and the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.

Statement on behalf of Narconon patients' families | WSB TV

On behalf of the numerous clients I represent who have been defrauded by Narconon's bogus drug rehab scam I would like to applaud the Georgia criminal authorities for the actions they took today. I sincerely hope that this spells the end of this dangerous and deceptive operation. I only wish it had come sooner so that those who have been harmed by Narconon could have avoided that fate. Now I hope the regulatory authorities do their job as well as the District Attorney and the Insurance Commissioner have done theirs and revoke Narconon's license.

    - Jeff Harris, Attorney for families of several former Narconon patients
