Occupy Oakland Ousted After Early Morning Police Raid: SFist

Using tear gas and riot gear, an estimated 200 police conducted early morning raids on Occupy Oakland protesters at Frank Ogawa Plaza on Tuesday. It took all of 30 minutes to clear out the encampment. Oakland Tribune reports, "After police surrounded the plaza about 4:45 a.m., they began moving in and taking down tents and barricades erected by the group, which had been camped there since Oct. 10 in support of the Occupy Wall Street effort."

Using tear gas and flash grenades would be a reasonable response to a mob which is rioting, vandalizing property, fire-bombing...

Too bad the protestors aren't doing any of that.

Who's in charge in Oakland? The mayor is out of town and the acting police chief is just an interim:

My former roommate, Rebecca Kaplan, ran against Quan for Oakland mayor. She's on the Oakland city council and should hear that this aggression will not stand, man. She is an ally, play nice.
Ignacio de la Fuente is the vice mayor of Oakland and a long-time council member, I suspect this is his doing (but have no proof). Someone had to sign off on this fiasco.

Now the Oakland PD Facebook page is gone.

What's really bizarre is that an hour ago I made a post about the Oakland PD on my Facebook page, and included a link to the Oakland PD Facebook page. One of my friends shared it on his page. A few minutes ago, both of those posts disappeared, and we certainly didn't delete them.

    Oakland Mayor Jean Quan

    October 25, 2011, 7:30 am

Statement from Mayor Jean Quan about today’s enforcement action

Many Oaklanders support the goals of the national Occupy Wall Street movement. We maintained daily communication with the protest0rs in Oakland.

However, over the last week it was apparent that neither the demonstrators nor the City could maintain safe or sanitary conditions, or control the ongoing vandalism. Frank Ogawa Plaza will continue to be open as a free speech area from 6 am to 10 pm.

We want to thank the police, fire, public works and other employees who worked over the last week to peacefully close the encampment. We also thank the majority of the protestors who peacefully complied with city officials.

I commend Chief Jordan for a generally peaceful resolution to a situation that deteriorated and concerned our community. His leadership was critical in the successful execution of this operation. City Administrator Deanna Santana developed the plan and secured mutual aid from other departments and the State of California. She will direct departmental teams, including safety, public works, communications, to restore conditions at the Plaza so that it is available for public use.

The City welcomes all Oaklanders to continue to use the Plaza during daylight hours for peaceful protest.

Brutal arrests at Occupy Oakland — RT

Police officers in Oakland, California arrested upwards of 75 protesters early this morning as they launched a crackdown on participants in the local Occupy Wall Street offshoot.

Occupants at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland were met with hundreds of police officers from at least 10 law-enforcement agencies at around 4:30 am PT this morning. Using a public address system, an official informed that crowd that “It has been determined you are illegally blocking Frank Ogawa Plaza and are the subject to arrest.” Hundreds of protesters with the Occupy Oakland movement had been camping out in a mass demonstration in the city park for two weeks now, but were informed that anyone staying following police orders this morning would face arrest.

Protected in riot helmets armed with flash grenades and rubber bullets, cops began a raid on the 150 or so tents shortly after this morning’s announcement. Think Progress reports that authorities on the scene fired projectiles with shotguns and other sources say this morning that police also used sound-guns on protesters. To an ABC affiliate, however, officers say that their own actions, for the most part, were pretty peaceful.
