Cops were cool, but they came just as we were driving out. Maybe the chalk wasn't such a good idea. lol

TROIS-RIVIÈRES – Opponents of Narconon Trois-Rivières held a demonstration on Sunday afternoon outside the rehab center based on the teachings of the Church of Scientology.

About twenty people, most of them masked, arrived at the stroke of noon in front of the facility located on Parent Boulevard. Many of them were there as part of the Anonymous collective, a group known for its fight against Scientology.

The organizer of the gathering was David Edgar Love, a former patient and employee of Narconon who has been fighting against Narconon since he managed to leave in 2009.

"I saw the horrors that went on here and the people that had to be taken to hospital," he said, "so we want to inform the public about the dangerous methods used at Narconon."

Mr. Love, a native of British Columbia, is hoping that the Quebec government will set rules to prevent any form of abuse.

"This is a dangerous process and Quebec must have regulations to protect the safety of its citizens, as well as of Canadians and Americans, since many patients come from very far away," he added.

"Narconon boasts that it has a 70% success rate, but in fact it's an 80% failure rate. I know, because it was my job to compile figures about all this when I was an employee here."

Among the twenty-some demonstrators, few were natives of Trois-Rivières and most were from all across Quebec and even from Ottawa.

Victory

Despite the seriousness of the accusations that the group levels against Narconon, this annual protest had a festive air on Sunday because the Quebec government revoked the rehab center's certification on April 10. With their portable stereo in hand, the demonstrators did not hesitate to celebrate what they consider a victory.

"I am very happy with the government's decision," rejoiced Mr. Love. "We know there are still staff in the facility and that there is still some activity here, because we flew over the area on Saturday in an airplane that we rented. It's a way to celebrate."

The group paid tribute to those who are said to have died as a result of inappropriate treatment in the various Narconon centers around the world. A similar demonstration was also held at the same time in Oklahoma.

(Trois-Rivières) About twenty protesters who oppose the Church of Scientology celebrated the shutdown of the controversial Narconon rehab center by the Mauricie Health Agency. Sporting the mask which was popularized in the V for Vendetta graphic novels by Alan Moore and which symbolizes the fight against the Church of Scientology, the demonstrators denounced the practices of Narconon that they consider characteristic of a cult.

The protesters, most of them members of the Anonymous movement, came mainly from Montreal and Quebec City to celebrate the shutdown of the rehab center. They had tea on a table set up by the roadside and danced to techno music. If not for their signs, the event could have been mistaken for a masquerade. "We won and you lost," one of the masked protesters said in English through a megaphone.

Two of the event's organizers, Pierre-Louis Leclerc and Christian Riopel, said they have been fighting for more than five years against the practices of the Church of Scientology. "The ties between the Church of Scientology and Narconon are clearly established," said Pierre-Louis Leclerc. "They were using methods that are scientifically unproven and dangerous for patients."

Two weeks ago, the Narconon drug rehabilitation center was forced to close down. The center did not meet 42 of the 55 criteria required to obtain certification from the Department of Health, 26 of which were ruled high risk factors.

The Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec Health Agency identified several questionable procedures used at Narconon, for example the sauna-sweating method combined with massive doses of vitamins, as well as the absence of medical supervision. Residents could spend five to six hours a day in a sauna for 25 days. These methods are not recognized by the Department of Health. Some residents also said they had been prevented from leaving the center. Narconon has 60 days from April 17 to contest its closure in court.

David Love, a former patient and employee of Narconon, said the dangerous techniques used in these centers have killed many participants in Narconon's therapies. "Narconon centers are responsible for 80 deaths. In one center located in Oklahoma, we've counted three deaths in recent months," he says. "A very good friend of mine died after being treated with massive doses of vitamins here in Trois-Rivières. Her liver couldn't cope with such a dose."

David Love also claims that members of the Church of Scientology are still occupying the building. He flew over the Narconon site in an airplane on Saturday and he sees the presence of vehicles as proof that the building is still in use.

David Love says that the center's users have left the area and have been transferred to other Narconon centers, mostly in the United States. According to its website, Narconon has 50 drug rehab centers in 21 countries. In Canada, Narconon has two other rehab centers, in Alberta and in British Columbia, and two prevention centers, in Vancouver and in Montreal. David Love's next campaign against Narconon centers will take place in Oklahoma.
