Just a reminder it doesn't matter which party the politician is in if they are associated with the cult of scientology and remain supportive of it despite being told of the issues surrounding the cult then they are not the kind of people who should be in politics for one or more of the following reasons:

    1. They fail to do proper research, they have the wrong advisers.
    2. They are too easily wooed.
    3. They are arrogant and cannot be reasoned with
    4. They are more interested in representing special interest groups than the people.
    5. They don't ask enough questions
    6. They are corrupt
    7. They are old school and believe admitting to making a mistake is always a sign of weakness rather than realising that sometimes it's better to admit the mistake and change course or they are rubbish at changing course without actually admitting it, which is what most skilled politicians do when they believe they have made a mistake; being old school would be okay if only more politicians were better at it.

So, now it's convenient to slam Scientology when your political career hangs in the balance.
I can see the campaign strategy meeting this was suggested in.
Reid: "what's the youth vote into these days?"
Staffer: "oh Facebook, some movies about shiny vampires and protesting
    Scientology"
Reid: "I don't know anything about Facebook or shiny vampires, but if they're protesting something, that means they'll vote Democrat. Democrats will protest just about every damn thing."
Staffer: "I'll get the speech writers on it, sir."

Even though that might be true she is a scientologist and she needs to be stopped.

Oh sweeeeeeet Jesus, that makes me happy. Thanks for finding the vid Triumph.

I was going to say merge this with the other Sharron Angle thread, but this deserves it's own discussion now that we are onto the general election whereas the last thread focused on the primary.

It really is something to note that the association with Scientology now automatically classifies you as a fucking nutjob not worthy of being trusted by "the people" with their vote.

What's hugely interesting about this ad to me is that Scientology is such a known (and disliked) quantity that the Reid ad can simply say "Scientology plan to give massages to prisoners" and that three seconds of shorthand is enough to tar Angle.

You don't have to like or dislike Reid to just simply get the notion of Scientology as being something you don't want to be associated with. This is such a huge change from 15 years ago, when Scn was an unknown quantity. Good work, DAVEY!

Don't think this is a one-way street. I expect Harry Reid to be a victim of Dead Agenting, even though it'll be relatively minor compared to the DAing the GOP dishes out regardless
  17. re: MSNBC: Harry Reid slams Sharron Angle on Scientology in prisons

As [Anonymous] has said we should not bring politics into this duscussion, and posting something non related to the scilon running for NV GOV. anyways to protect my fellow republicans, democrats dish out the same amout of bs, have you watched msnbc?

It isn't as much the Scientology association as it is the being nice to prisoners association that they're hitting on.

They call it "mudslinging" in politics, and really, in the not insane community at large

She's running for Senate. She is not a Scientologist.

Only the people that read these forums see this as a Scientology issue and not a "being soft on prisoners" issue.

I could careless about Reid or Angle (It's spelled Sharron btw) in this forum.

I do, however, have an interest in seeing Angle denying the connection. Prison massages, ftw!

If it really was a deadly poison, she wouldn't have gotten this far. When flinging muck at an opponent who's currently campaign-poor and can't respond, use a big scoop!

Other Scientology-friendly politicians who have gone down in flames frequently have so many other flaws (Stone, Gus Barreiro, Mark Foley...) that it can't be pinned on just that connection.

Re: MSNBC: Harry Reid slams Sharron Angle on Scientology in prisons

Agree. A friend and I were taking bets: would Reid use the cult connections to discredit Angle, or would Angle's cult connections try to rush to smear Reid first?

Looks like I "won" that speculation contest.

Re: MSNBC: Harry Reid slams Sharron Angle on Scientology in prisons

Was there ever really any chance of the other option happening?

Do you really think Scientology would spend their money on a political ad? IDK about Nevada, but it is illegal for a religion to spend any money on politics in some states.

Scientology always looks for ways to bypass the rules (becuase they are the only people who can help).
    • Form a PAC (Well worth studying)
    • Get a pile of Scientologists to spontaneously donate.

Re: MSNBC: Harry Reid slams Sharron Angle on Scientology in prisons

That's a somewhat obtuse observation, given that no politician in recent memory, and definitely not one of Reid's stature, has negatively referenced Scientology to score political points. Few politicians have been forced to defend taking Scientology's money and/or promoting their front groups. Regardless of whether "Scientology" was a mere adjective modifying the prison program in the ad, Reid's people likely knew that it, as opposed to the 'soft on prisoners' label, would have a greater impact; which, judging from the subsequent stories about the ad, was correct. The risk is that he's labeled a religious bigot, but it seems doubtful that would stick.
