Are you asking that question as a recognized authority on the subject?

Reading this thread, it occurs to me that I am the only person from the group of merry diners (save Andreas, who does not have an account here) (that I know of?) who has not told their version of the story. Please allow me to blather incessantly now.

I was across the street from the main group of mostly-OG protesters at the entrance to the parking structure, so I didn’t hear about a lot of the other stuff going on.

    dianetics_may_23_67.jpg

When I finally made my way over to the group I learned Mark Bunker had been told that if he returned to the hotel he would be arrested. That was disappointing since we had planned to celebrate his birthday dinner in the Boneventure after the raid. We didn’t want Bunker to be arrested, but we also didn’t want to have to hassle finding new party digs, so Glib, Tory, and I decided to go in and use our powerful cheesy grin technology on the hotel security.

There was a lot of activity in front of the hotel between the Scilons, OSA, some Anons, and a group of prom-goers that arrived in decorated rickshaws. Lots of people snapping pictures. We purposely sought out an official employee of the hotel (it was fairly obvious some OSA guys were impersonating hotel security to try to drive us off). We found an official looking guy and explained that the protest was over, that we had put away our signs and now just wanted to enjoy dinner. The guy said sure, no problem. I happened to be standing next to a guy, later identified as “Charlie” from OSA who was yelling, “these people will be arrested the minute they step inside!”, but the security guard just motioned us in.

Inside the lobby, Charlie immediately got in Tory’s face, yelling more arrest threats and saying she couldn’t take photos of him (she had her camera out and focused right on him). She just grinned and said, “Too late.” This set Charlie off even more and he turned to start in on me. I said, “Hey! Settle down! There’s no need for all this drama. We have a right to be here and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Charlie followed us to the elevator and as we stepped in he shouted, “Get in the elevator!” The three of us looked at each other and laughed. How absurd this man was being. I figured he needed to be seen as giving commands by his two young protégées standing nearby. We beckoned to one of the young men to join us in the elevator and were delighted when he obliged.

It was a brief ride up to the fourth floor but time enough to have a very pleasant conversation with this fellow. He asked me what those “funny carts” were out front. I explained about a high school prom being held simultaneously with their event in the hotel. He wasn’t much older than high school age himself. He seemed fascinated by what was happening. We invited him to hang with us while we went to find a restaurant but he declined and disappeared.

We quickly decided on a place to dine and left Tory there to make sure no one talked the receptionist out of our reservations. Glib and I picked up a new OSA tail as soon as we left the restaurant. We turned to acknowledge him, then walked up to him to introduce ourselves. He shook our hands and said he couldn’t give us his name, but let us nickname him Blue Tie Guy. Glibby asked him a question, “Tell me something. Do you think we are bad people?” He looked surprised but quickly answered, no. I asked, “Are you afraid of us?” “I am definitely not afraid of you,” he replied. “What is your job here tonight?” I asked. He said, “Just keeping an eye on you.” Glib explained that we weren’t there to protest or cause problems, our plans were strictly to have a celebration dinner. He acknowledged we weren’t troublemakers. I asked him to let the guy downstairs know that so he could knock off all the drama. Blue Tie Guy laughed and said, “He’s always like that.” Glib and I started walking and invited him to join us, but he said he needed to keep a respectable distance. At one point we made a wrong turn and Blue Tie Guy very kindly pointed out our error and set us back on track.

Back with the group, we told them where Tory was awaiting their arrival and that it was safe to ignore the pseudo security guards and enter the hotel. Glib and I went to the car to deposit our signs before heading back up.

On our way back to the hotel, Swift called and said he had negotiated some kind of deal with the hotel security and that we needed to be escorted back up to the restaurant by someone named John. Glib and I accidentally back escalatored our way to the restaurant without calling John, cuz that’s how we roll, and no harm was done. Inside the restaurant we learned about the deal Swift had made and agreed to abide by it, even though it meant no picture taking – which was a personal disappointment. I luv me the photos of life n stuff. We were seating along a window facing a walkway and I saw all the OSA guys kept busy zipping back and forth and watching us. I wanted to invite them in, to at least have a seat at the end of the bar where they could keep an eye on us, maybe listen in on our soooper sekrit blah blah if they wanted. But a couple of the other guests pooh poohed my idea. They said I’d be arrested. I thought that whole arrest thing was ridiculous.

Anyway, as others have said, right after Bunker’s caek was served two security guards appeared and demanded we leave. This is the only part of the evening I really did not enjoy – being escorted single file through the restaurant. It was ludicrous. Outside, several of us noticed the back end of the group seemed to have lagged behind somewhere, so we stopped to let them catch up. I was getting irritated and said something fussy about the situation, to which Bunker replied, “Yeah, but this makes a MUCH better story!” He was right. I got over being annoyed and went back to having fun. Just then someone said that someone in our group was refusing to leave, and then some confusion broke out as we tried to ascertain who it was and why they were doing that. I never did figure out who that person was. One of the guards insisted we keep moving, so we sorta left without them.

As we descended the final flight of stairs, Otto was standing there smiling pleasantly and said “good night” as we passed. What was left of our group said their goodbyes and then Glibby and I trudged alone all the way back around the building to get to our parking structure. But we didn’t afraid of OSA. What are they gonna do? Threaten to arrest us for being too awesome?

Bottom line for me, I think the hotel was in a bad situation stuck between these two factions. They tried a compromise. I wasn't real thrilled about the escort and arrest threats, but I suspect Scientology's discomfort level was a thousand times greater than mine. IMO the compromise was stacked in our favor. I have no qualms with the Westin Boneventure Hotel and would DEFINITELY do again.

Re: Civil Rights & Criminal Law Violations-May 23, 2009-Westin Bonaventure

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

On May 23, 2009 the Church of Scientology held an event at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The Church of Scientology is a highly controversial group. Not surprisingly, about thirty activists against Scientology abuse, crime and fraud gathered to protest the event. They included participants in the Anonymous protest group and me.

The purpose of this letter is to briefly set forth the pertinent facts, as I understand them to be, as part of a complaint to your company and to the relevant local, state and national authorities. The conduct described below is consistent with Church of Scientology written policies and documented practices mandating the sorts of civil and criminal misconduct that the Church of Scientology and your company engaged in from about 6 PM until about 10-30 PM on the evening of Saturday May 23, 2009.

There are two main areas of concern; what happened outside the hotel and what happened inside the hotel. You can read descriptions and comments, and see videos and photographs, at http://forums.whyweprotest.net/121-flash-raids/los-angeles-dianetics-celebration-05-23-09-a-46027/2/

First, what happened outside the hotel can be seen on the following video on You Tube.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPxbN1njYls&feature=channel_page]YouTube - Raid on Dianetics Anniversary Celebration, Part 2[/ame]

In essence, as this first video shows, your hotel security staff, seemingly headed by someone wearing a name badge of Samuel and acting at the direction of Scientologists, unlawfully excluded, and/or attempted to exclude, some thirty or more protestors from the public sidewalks around the Bonaventure Hotel. We were threatened with being arrested for trespassing (on the outer half of the sidewalk and public right of way). However, your security was unable to produce a copy of any city permit authorizing the closure of any portion of the sidewalk for any reason. Later the Los Angeles Police Department arrived and they took no action to support your hotels exclusion of members of the public from the sidewalks outside your building on the ground of their religious and political beliefs (e.g. their anti-scientology abuse, crime and fraud opinions). The Scientology enterprise considers itself above the law and members of your company’s staff also engaged in the violations.

Second, what happened inside the hotel can be seen at [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu2TYSazWio&feature=channel]YouTube - Raid on Dianetics Anniversary Celebration, Part 4[/ame] (You Tube: Raid on Dianetics Anniversary Celebration, Part 4) (5:55 to the end) and read

“We stood right by the entrance to the parking garage across the street from the Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown LA. With us were a bunch of Scientologists with signs about [their anniversary event]. Then some anons stood on the bridge from the parking structure to the hotel, and some stood on the street … . Then, we decided to take [Mr. Mark Bunker] to dinner for his birthday in the hotel, but this … [Scientologist] in front of the hotel went nuts, saying we would get arrested if we went in. We asked the hotel doorman if it would be ok if we ate there, and he said Sure. So 3 of us walked in to look for a restaurant in the hotel and the [Scientologists] followed us around like zombies in a horror movie. We would turn a corner, and there would be 3 more of them. It was nuts. We found a restaurant, [went] in, too, and the [Scientologists] really hit the roof. … They kept walking by incessantly, checking on us, and by the time we finished, they'd worked the place up into such a frenzy that the hotel staff led us out the back door. Phew!”

“Once again, Scientologists attempted, via an implied representation as hotel officials, to assert operational and ownership control over private property that the Church does not own. I have seen this tactic before. Last night at the [Westin Bonaventure) the same misrepresentations occurred except that we, meaning the critics, knew that the [Scientology Office of Special Affairs staffers] were impotent whiners on Westin's turf and that the L.A.P.D. did not care to waste taxpayer dollars by dispatching even one more car for whining Scientologists.

[Four of us] were entering the Westin Bonaventure for a Birthday Dinner for [one of our group, Mr. Mark Bunker] when a [Scientologist] stepped in front of us and started saying that [Mr. Bunker] was going to be arrested. Fortunately, John, one of the security men for the [Westin Bonaventure] intervened as did his colleague, both very diplomatic gentlemen. Westin security made it clear that we were welcome to have dinner in the hotel so long as we left our signs behind and stayed in the restaurant. Westin did not want to be in the middle of the dust up between two parties and simply asked us to not to disturb the [Scientology] event. Fair enough. The Westin Bonaventure staff was polite to both parties and I commend the hotel and its staff. … “As we were being seated in the restaurant, Westin security was escorting in a few of the stragglers. I went to the entrance of the restaurant to wait for Graham Berry. A [Scientology] security agent pounced and informed me that I would be arrested if I stepped foot from the restaurant into the hotel proper… *****

“We dined at The Brewery on the 4th floor of the hotel. There were at least 10 tired, hungry protesters. After singing Happy Birthday to Mark and passing around his slab of birthday cake, "Samuel", the abusive Westin security guard came to the table and told us we all had to leave the restaurant. I learned that the [Scientologists] had notified hotel management that the Dianetics event was concluding and they didn't want the attendees running into [our group] in the hotel. …”

As you may have noted from the comments of others above, several of the Westin Hotel door staff were polite and obligingly allowed some of the twelve diners to proceed up to the fourth floor restaurant. I was the last to arrive having first returned to my car to leave picket signs, camera and other items that may have caused a problem inside the hotel. As I walked quietly back into the hotel I was challenged by two Scientology security officers stationed inside your foyer. I ignored them and continued to The Brewery on the fourth floor of The Bonaventure. The twelve of us engaged in a quiet dinner except for a short verse of Happy Birthday as the restaurant delivered a slice of ice cream cake with one candle on it. However, during the entire time we were outside the restaurant staffers from the Church of Scientology Office of Special Affairs (the Church’s intelligence and intimidation bureau). On several occasions they were with your hotel security. Clearly, while eating on your premises, we were being harassed on account of our religious and political views (being against Scientology abuses, crimes and frauds). This unlawful conduct peaked at 9-45 PM while we were finishing dinner, requesting the bill and orders of coffee.

At 9-45 PM Westin Bonaventure security officer Samuel and another Westin Bonaventure employee arrived. They said that we had finished eating so therefore we were to leave immediately and in haste. I said I wanted coffee first and was told that I’d be arrested if I did not leave immediately. It was “an agreement” your Samuel said. However, I and most of the others were not party to any agreement that we leave our dinner when the Church of Scientology instructed Westin Bonaventure security that we were to be thrown out. Remember this was a quiet social dinner without any disturbances or indicia that we had been part of a civil and human rights protest outside the hotel.

To add insult to injury we were ordered out of the fourth floor and onto the outside patio area and rushed down to the five flights of outdoor cement stairs at the corner of Flower and Fifth. One older woman with me, Tory Christman, was not able to walk as fast as Samuel wished. She asked to be taken down in the elevator. He refused until we forced the issue. Samuel called for assistance and he escorted Tory Christman out the main entrance while the rest of us were hurried down flight after flight of cement stairwell and steps. Not so coincidentally, the Scientology/Dianetics function was emptying out at the same time.

Over the past 23 years I have spent many hundreds of dollars dining in the Westin Bonaventure, and large law firms I have been a partner of have spent thousands of dollars on group lunches and dinners there. Accordingly, I was shocked to be treated by your security staff as though I were a common criminal who had to be pushed down the back stairs.

The conduct of your hotel staff on this occasion was consistent with a policy, pattern and practice of other such instances of Scientology inspired civil rights violations over the past fifteen months in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

In particular, the conduct of the Church of Scientology and of Starwood Hotels constitutes a prima facie violation of various federal and state civil rights and Penal Code provisions as aggravated by the hate crimes statutes.

At about 10-50 PM on Saturday May 23, 2009 I telephoned the duty manager at the Westin Bonaventure hotel and spoke to a person identifying himself as France, the duty manager. I provided him with a verbal summary of what occurred along with my name and telephone number. I have had no further communication from your hotel and so additional legal action now appears necessary.

    Very truly yours,

Thanks very much for the report! I am unclear about something.

I don't see why there was a need for any "deal". You (the 3 women) had already made the arrangements and gotten the reservations, so what was the problem that Swift et al needed to negotiate? Am I missing some details here?

Thank you Graham, and much improved. It would have avoided much criticism in the first place if srsbzness wasn't mixed with forum posts using sci-fi made up words.

One observation.... You put forth that the bull was requested prior to the security asking your party to leave. J. Swift also claimed that same thing in his original comments, about only negotiating dinner, and that dinner was completed prior to being asked to leave.

It seems from your statements and J Swift statements that the restaurant acted well within their tolerances of drama. Any talk of civil action because of bullshit perceived early termination of dining should be dropped, because as horrified as you were with being escorted down a back stairwell, no reasonable protester / critic can expect much different considering a group you were protesting rented tha facilities and paid a lot more money for that event on private property, and half of your party was told they would be trespassing if they came back... so all in all, they seem quite reasonable.

Very good. I did catch some tiny typo / word choice / phrasing things, but, overall, it is articulate and is more to the point.

I would have included in the opening paragraph a sentence stating that an incident took place (details to be given below in body of letter, as you did) as well as what you hoped the hotel would choose to do for you / others now or in the future. IOW, a summary of the complaint as well as what they could do about it that would make you a happy customer, right in Paragraph the First. :)

At about 10:50 PM on Saturday, May 23, 2009, I telephoned the [STRIKE]duty manager at the [/STRIKE]Westin Bonaventure hotel and spoke to a person identifying himself as France, the duty manager. I provided him with a verbal summary of what occurred, along with my name and telephone number. I have had no further communication from your hotel and thus additional legal action now appears necessary.

    Very truly yours,

    Graham E. Berry
    *************end Graham Berry's letter**************

(I removed the quote tags because quotations are italicized and I made a few comments in itals before I remembered that.)

All in all, a VERY much improved letter (not that the original was terrible, IMHO). I hope it produces the desired results. Again, giving the hotel mgmt. an idea WHAT actions you would consider appropriate as apology or recompense might help even more.

Keep up the excellent work. You are greatly appreciated. I'm sorry your celebratory dinner with Mark was overshadowed in any way by the actions of the cult or the hotel staff acting on their behalf, and, in essence, favoring the complaints of one group of customers over the rights of another group.

Please accept my editing corrections in the helpful spirit intended, and not as criticism of your hard work or good intentions.

See here's the thing. They probably don't care about all that. It's irrelevant to them. When you start trying to add rhetorical flourish like that, their going to roll their eyes at your pontificating. The best approach is to be straight and to the point, and forget about all that extraneous stuff. Tell the hotel people about what happened and why you're upset. Basically you should be saying that, regardless of who or what the parties involved are, you were wronged and you are upset.

Again, it's this constantly swinging for the fences approach. A little tact goes a long way.
