Yes I'm serious. I wish your reply was more helpful to my understanding of your own thinking.

So you agree with me: there needs to be a distinction between remembering and honoring.

Monuments in places of civic honor represent who we are as a people today. Do we really want to honor the cause of corporate fat cats eager to expand their profitable slave trade into western Federal territories? Do we want to honor any sort of armed rebellion against "We, the People"?

Corporate fat cats again want control of Federal territories in western states. They're funding militia groups like the Bundys and a host of other angry loonies. These people talk openly about the coming "Civil War." So I think it is a big mistake to teach kids that the Confederate cause was just.

  4. You seriously called me a sectarian?

    sec·tar·i·an·ism

    noun

excessive attachment to a particular sect or party, especially in religion.
    "religious sectarianism"

That's in religion wrong use of the word buddy.

I interpreted your sarcasm as an exaggeration of your opponent's position in order to belittle that position. Did I miss something?
  6. Would you like to see a statue of Ivan in Athens, Alabama?
  7. I was being sarcastic.

    I don't belittle people's positions.
  8. I have a few ideas but only if you'll humor me for a monument.

"Especially" does not mean "exclusively." Below is a discussion of the problem of sectarianism in medical science published in 1913.

Sarcasm is a way of poking fun at something using exaggeration. "Poking fun" means "belittling."

How about a monument to poorly examined personal beliefs, likely due to youth and limited exposure to real criticism? I can whip one of those up for you in short order.

Hey I stumbled upon a name for that cult you're defending, Johnny_Reb:
Good article on the tech of Confederatology here:

  15. I really don't see the point in posting that.

A lot of the classic folk tunes of America were popular at Minstrel shows.

  17. Ohai, Johnny_Federalist!

How do you feel about Dallas's duly-elected city council voting to remove monuments? Do you think they did it wrong, or did they follow due process? Do you still think all the local people should have to vote everywhere there are monuments, no matter what powers might exist for their local officials? Where and how do you draw the lines on who gets to vote? Have you ever lived in Dallas? Do you feel like you know what's best for that community? And all the other communities with monuments? If so, doesn't that make you a federalist?

It seems to me that in your ideal world, the force of your arguments would demolish the will of the Dallas city council members, and cause them to renounce their powers to govern so that you can impose your solution from the outside on that community. The city council would meekly stop debating the question, neglecting their vested powers and responsibilities so they can immediately appropriate funds for a referendum on the issue, because Johnny_Federalist said it should be that way, in Dallas and Everywhere.

"Sorry, local officials. Shove your self-governance and your states' rights up your arses. Johnny_Federalist's edict has come down from Uncle Sam, and you are all going to have to plan for referendums in your communities if you want to address the monument issue. Every single one of you. There's no way your local governance systems could possibly be trusted to settle this issue as they each see fit. Instead, you have to accept this one solution, only, which is to have a referendum."
  18. I feel the same way I do about any monument being removed.

They can (unfortunately) do whatever they wish as long as it's not against against the law.

quote="ornery, post: 2617531"]Do you still think all the local people should have to vote everywhere there are monuments, no matter what powers might exist for their local officials?[/quote]

Not everywhere but they should still be able to say "No, we want this monument to stay!" or "Take it down!".

(They should be allowed to vote if the issue of the monument gets too hot.)

They should realize that there's more important things that can be fixed like fixing pot holes, and the general upkeep of the community.

And because this is Texas we're talking about here's a question: Why aren't they focusing on helping their neighbours impacted by the hurricane instead of this?

It really depends on the situation.

And no I'm not a Texan.

But regardless of that our history should be preserved.

Johnny the monuments are not history. They're "Lost Cause" lies.
