Karin Pouw and Scientology’s Applied Scholastics ASAP Scam - Canada cult | Examiner.com

    By David Edgar Love

Scientology spokesperson, Karin Pouw, published a press release today, stating that by “using Study Technology developed by educator, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, it fills gaps in a student’s ability to grasp subject matter and apply what they have learned, enabling them to move forward in their studies independently.”

On Scientology’s Applied Scholastics website, it appears that Scientology may be using their infamous IQ Testing and Personality tests on young children? Their website states: “After initial testing to establish the student’s baseline proficiency in a subject, “Study Guides” are used.

Some parents were upset when Applied Scholastics methods were introduced in September 2008 at Bambolino Montessori Academy, a private school in Toronto. The owner/principal and dean of the school are both Scientologists but they say that Applied Scholastics is secular and that they do not teach Scientology.

Grumph! They shouldn't call it a DBA, it's a separate incorporation.

  11. California Ranch School has the same address http://www.movoto.com/schools/perris-ca/california-ranch-school-a9500299/.
They also have a math tutor book
As a math tutor in sunny California, John McCormick has helped hundreds of students succeed in math.
His secret: John found that the words used to describe math ideas were more problematic than the techniques themselves. In fact, students quickly grasp techniques; the difficulty is the language of math—the verbal and written explanations describing the techniques.
John began a project of listing all the words used in primary and secondary math courses in the order they appeared.

There's no incorporation for California Ranch School, so that's probably a DBA. Let's see, Riverside County...

Hmm, there's been a few of those:

    Current one:
    File Number: R-201309277
    Number of Names: 3
    Business Name: CALIFORNIA RANCH SCHOOL
    Number of Registrants: 1
    Registrant Name: NICOLOSI, CLAUDIA NOEMI

    Expiration Date: 9/3/2018

The IRS doesn't care what's going on at the state level regarding DBA's. They only go by what's on the 1023 or Group Exemption request.

As long as the primary name isn't changed, which does require IRS notification to maintain the EIN continuity, the DBA could change 20 times at state level and the IRS doesn't care. They'll change it if notified, but don't require notification.

What I'm wondering is if this bunch broke off from ASI, still pays the licensing fees, and has their own 1023 pending for "independent" 501(c)3 status. Or if they never got around to submitting a 1023.

Most sites list them with the group exemption even though they stopped putting it on their Form 990 in 2011.

What does the IRS master list say? Odds are, their software treats it as minor filing mistake and fills in the blank.

Edit: Applied Scholastics International doesn't use the group exemption either.

Like I mentioned above, the IRS Exempt Org listing shows everything under ASI as still exempt under GEN 4171 as of 06/08/15.

It sounds like whoever's doing their 990's these days doesn't know about the Group Exemption, so isn't putting it on the form. I just hit the IRS 'Select Check' using ASI's EIN of 237250829, and it shows the 'Deductibility Status' as "Group". Which means the Group Exemption Letter is still in force.

If I get some time next week, I may call the IRS Exempt Org folks and ask if there are 1023's pending to break up the Group Exemption, or if this is just sloppy 990 filing they need to slap ASI for.

It only accredits in two States, California and Hawaii. 17 of its 18 Commissioners are California residents. I would bet they did not scrutinize the curriculum. Remember, the State of California did nothing about Hubbard's front group diploma mill alma mater, Sequoia University, for several decades.

Sequoia University was never Hubbard's front group. That was a mistake in a 1968 UK report that was released a few years back.
