Israel Guilty of Ethnic Cleansing and Apartheid, Says UN Rapporteur

A UN human rights investigator has accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and apartheid policies against Palestinians.

Richard Falk, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, said Israel carried out a "systematic and continued effort to change the ethnic composition of East Jerusalem".

Falk, an 82-year-old American, said that in recent years Israel had made it more difficult for Palestinians to reside there while encouraging the building of new Jewish settlements, which are illegal under international law.

Falk, an emeritus law professor at Princeton University, said that more than 11,000 Palestinians had lost their right to live in Jerusalem since 1996.

"The 11,000 is just the tip of the iceberg because many more are faced with possible challenges to their residency rights," he said.

Falk, who is Jewish, described Israeli policies as bearing "unacceptable characteristics of colonialism, apartheid and ethnic cleansing".

"What is called occupation is now more widely understood to be a form of annexation, the embodiment of apartheid in the sense that there's a discriminatory dual system of law, giving legal protection to the Israeli settlers and subjecting the Palestinian population under occupation to a continuing existence without rights," he said.

Falk said that the "realities on the ground" for the Palestinian people have worsened since he took up his post in 2008. He is due to step down later this month.

He said Israel's settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem hampered the outcome of deadlocked peace talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority.

"Every increment of enlarging the settlements or every incident of house demolition is a way of worsening the situation confronting the Palestinian people and reducing what prospects they might have as the outcome of supposed peace negotiations.

"There are other reasons for encouraging the idea that it's still possible to negotiate a settlement based on the two-state model, even though most informed observers regard it as highly implausible given the changes that have taken place during the period of occupation and given the outlook of the Netanyahu government," he said.

20 years ago Israel elected a government that went further than any in its history to meet Palestinian demands and make peace with its neighbors. They signed a peace treaty with Jordan and negotiated the Oslo accords which proposed in principle a Palestinian state subject to further negotiations.

In response Palestinian extremists started a wave of suicide attacks against Israeli civilians. Israeli extremists assassinated Israel's peacemaking leader and also set up an attack against Palestinian civilians. This led to both groups pulling back. Israel built a wall to keep out suicide bombers, and elected right-wing governments, Palestinians elected Hamas, whose constitution calls for the annihilation of Israel and its Jewish citizens.

And so tragically here we are today. Instead of peace and a Palestinian state we have Hamas' endless war and Israel's wall and settlements, all because 20 years ago a small minority of extremists on both sides sowed seeds of mistrust through acts of terror.

    Successful terrorists were successful.

Gunshots fired at Al Jazeera bureau in Gaza | Al Jazeera English

Gunshots have been fired into Al Jazeera’s bureau in the Gaza Strip amid an intensified bombardment campaign on the Palestinian enclave.

The shots caused panic among the civilians living in the same building but no casualties have been reported in the incident on Tuesday morning.

"Two very precise shots were fired straight into our building", Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from the bureau in Gaza said. "We are high up in the building so we had a very strong vantage point over the area. But we have evacuated." The bureau is situated in a residential area of Gaza City. "Our office building also has many residential apartments. People [are] leaving, panicked."

The attack came a day after Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was quoted by local media as saying his country will work to close down Al Jazeera in Israel. Al Jazeera "has abandoned even the perception of being a reliable news organisation and broadcasts from Gaza and to the world anti-Israel incitement, lies, and encouragement to the terrorists," Lieberman said.

Al Jazeera has been covering the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip that started on July 8. "The foreign minister’s comments were a direct threat against us and appear to have been taken as a green light for the targeting of our journalists in Gaza. We hold the Israeli authorities fully responsible. They have put the lives of journalists in danger," the network said in a statement.

US, European airlines suspend flights to Israel | CNN

A number of the world's leading airlines on Tuesday suspended flights to Israel's main airport after a rocket fired from Gaza struck about a mile from its runways.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered U.S. airlines to stop flying to or from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport for at least 24 hours, and the European Aviation Safety Agency issued a warning to its airlines to stop its flights.

IMHO: Abby should just politely leave RT-TV. It's not like she couldn't go it alone, and still have a huge audience. And I am also, still of the opinion, that Glen Greenwald should be having a chat with the lass. Abby would be a tremendous addition to that team.

Anonymous is now calling on hackers to launch new attacks on Friday so that "Israel will feel fear tingling in their servers, and homes," according to the group's public call to arms. The Anonymous spokesperson says that this plan appears to have originated with members in the collective's North American and European factions.
Israel's National Cyber Bureau, the agency tasked with protecting national infrastructure from cyber threats, did not respond to a request for comment.

France's Jews Flee As Rioters Burn Paris Shops, Attack Synagogue

France's politicians and community leaders have criticised the "intolerable" violence against Paris' Jewish community, after a pro-Palestinian rally led to the vandalizing and looting of Jewish businesses and the burning of cars.

It is the third time in a week where pro-Palestinian activists have clashed with the city's Jewish residents. On Sunday, locals reported chats of "Gas the Jews" and "Kill the Jews", as rioters attacked businesses in the Sarcelles district, known as "little Jerusalem".

This is total bullshit behavior, from stupid ignorant assholes. Anonymous does not hate the Israeli people. We just plain hate their fucking government, for all the heinous fucking bullshit that they are perpetrating upon innocent civilians, and the vulnerable, terrified children, of Gaza

I'm really hoping that sanity will prevail, and that the Palistinians of Sarcelles district will simply knock that shit off. It's helping no one.

UN human rights body to investigate claims of Israeli violations in Gaza

UN's human rights chief says Israel has not done enough to protect civilians while also condemning attacks by Hamas

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has agreed to launch an international inquiry into violations that may have been committed during Israel's latest military offensive in Gaza.
Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights, warned earlier that Israel may have committed war crimes in its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, where hundreds of Palestinian civilians have been killed in the past two weeks.

Pillay told an emergency debate at the UNHRC in Geneva that Israel had not done enough to protect civilians.
"There seems to be a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes," Pillay said, citing air strikes and the shelling of homes and hospitals. The killing of civilians in Gaza, including dozens of children, raised concerns over Israel's precautions and its respect for proportionality, she said.

Revealed: the Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces

More children than Palestinian fighters are being killed in Israel's offensive on Gaza, according to the UN. Shown here are the name, age, and sex of 132 of those children, recorded by the Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights. Israel claims Hamas bears responsibility for civilian deaths because it stores weapons incivilian areas and some of its rockets are falling on Gaza territory

MSNBC’s Sole Palestinian Voice Rula Jebreal Takes on Pro-Israeli Goverment Bias at Network and in US Media

A week after public outrage helped force NBC’s reversal of a decision to pull veteran reporter Ayman Mohyeldin out of Gaza, the sole Palestinian contributor to sister network MSNBC has publicly criticized its coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict. "We are disgustingly biased when it comes to this issue," Rula Jebreal said Monday on MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow Daily, citing a disproportionate amount of Palestinian voices and a preponderance of Israeli government officials and supporters. Jebreal joins us to discuss her decision to speak out against MSNBC and her broader criticism of the corporate media’s Israel-Palestine coverage. An author and political analyst who worked for many years as a broadcast journalist in Italy, Jebreal also shares her personal story as a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship who is married to a Jewish man and has a Jewish sister.

Israel threatens to escalate Gaza offensive

Moshe Ya'alon, Israel's defence minister, threatens to escalate the Gaza offensive to the "next stages"

Israel threatened to escalate the Gaza offensive to the "next stages" on Wednesday as the United Nations said that "war crimes" may have been committed.
Air strikes and tank shells killed another 47 people in Gaza, bringing the total Palestinian death toll to 678, according to the health ministry. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that three more soldiers were killed, taking their total military losses to 32.

All of these troops have died since Operation Protective Edge escalated into a ground invasion last Thursday.
Moshe Ya'alon, the defence minister, visited troops near Gaza and warned of a further expansion of the offensive, designed to protect Israel's cities from rocket attacks and destroy a network of storage and attack tunnels dug by Hamas.

"We are preparing the next stages of the fighting after dealing with the tunnels and you need to be ready for any mission," Mr Ya'alon told the soldiers. "You need to be ready for more important steps in Gaza and the units that are now on standby need to prepare to go in."

Health Ministry: At least 15 dead in Israeli shelling of Gaza school | Reuters

Israeli forces shelled a U.N.-run school sheltering Palestinians in the northern Gaza strip, the Gaza health ministry said on Thursday, killing at least 15 people and raising the conflict's death toll to nearly 750.

Israel Radio said, without citing a source, that most of those killed at the United Nations school were children.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the incident reported as a truce between the Jewish state and Hamas-led Islamist guerrillas remained elusive, despite intensive attempts at mediation.

Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry, said that as well as the 15 dead, another 200 people were wounded in the attack. The director of a local hospital said various medical centers around Beit Hanoun in the coastal enclave were receiving the wounded.

Pools of blood lay on the ground and on students' desks in the courtyard of the school near the apparent impact mark of the shell, according to a Reuters photographer at the scene.

"Such a massacre requires more than one hospital to deal with it," said Ayman Hamdan, director of the Beit Hanoun hospital.

On CNN the Israeli finance minister just said LA airport more dangerous than their airport then said I don't want to offend anyone. Wolf said he offended people, the minister repeated the LA airport was dangerous, Wolf said he flew there all the time and it wasn't, the minister insisted it was and talked over Wolf. This is how they do things. Support something untrue and then just talk over the response.
This will anger more people than the lies about the Palestinians, maybe that will take a bite out of their propaganda.
