As crimes against women surge, Akhilesh Yadav goes into damage-control mode

The Samajwadi Party government has gone into damage-control mode after four major incidents of crime against women rocked Uttar Pradesh in quick succession, suspending the Station House Officer and a sub-inspector of the Gomtinagar station here for their shoddy investigation into the rape and murder of a minor.

The incident occurred at Chinhat last week. It was the autopsy report that blew a hole in the police theory that the five-year-old had died of a dog bite.
The post-mortem report confirmed rape and murder, with no less than 50 wounds inflicted on the victim by the accused, said to be a close relative, who is absconding.
It was the suspended SHO, Devendra Dubey, who invented the dog bite theory. He is also alleged to have accosted the panel of doctors that conducted the post mortem.

Six persons, including two women, were named in the FIR, but no arrest was made. ......He said police investigations suggested that the girl and a boy were to be married, but things went awry after the boy’s family wanted dowry, a demand rejected by the girl’s parents. To sort out the matter, the girl went to the boy’s house, where he raped her and his family members set her ablaze.

Lalji Saroj, who attacked the girl when she had gone to the toilet, was arrested on Friday. Another accused, Indal, was arrested on Thursday.

n the Saharanpur incident of five motorcycle-borne miscreants having tried to molest and run their vehicle over an athlete on Wednesday, the police arrested Savej, Indrajeet and Varun, while two other accused are absconding.

"Something terrible" is happening in Indian society, the country's foreign minister has said as protests continued over a series of child rapes and the failure of the police and government to improve women's safety.

n this latest outcry however, opposition leaders and women's rights campaigners have called for Delhi's police commissioner to be sacked over the treatment of the girl's family. When her relatives reported her missing in their slum colony on April 15, police refused to search for her and when she was discovered in a critical condition 40 hours later officers offered her father 2000 Rupees - around £25 - to keep quiet.

Campaigners reject government claim that Indian women are now safer

Campaigners have rejected Indian government claims that it has improved women's safety following the outcry over the gang-rape and murder of a 23 year old Delhi student last December.

The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government is expected to claim significant advances in women's safety in a report card to mark its ninth year in power, including measures to curb sexual harassment at work, fast track trials in rape cases and a new law to impose 20 years to life imprisonment for convicted rapists and the death penalty where the victim dies from her injuries.
The ruling alliance is also expected to claim it has tackled corruption with moves towards greater transparency and accountability in government.
Its claims, however, were ridiculed by women's rights campaigners who said it was wrong to claim it has made any impact on sexual violence when the number of assaults and rapes have risen significantly since the Delhi gang rape and murder caused widespread anger throughout India.

Reports of the 634 attacks that preceded December’s rape of the woman who has become known as “India’s daughter” were sketchy – a few brief paragraphs in the local newspapers, nothing more. But in this case the details were too brutal to be overlooked. .... six men, all drunk, first “eve-teased” her – the local euphemism for the harassment of women – then attacked her so savagely that she later died.
