Disconnection, Miscavige style: How Scientology’s most powerful family came apart

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, April 20, 2016

Ron Miscavige and his twin children, David and Denise

Whitney Covington was arrested Friday night by police in Clearwater, Florida, and booked into the Pinellas County jail on misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

It surprised no one who knew her.

Ms. Covington, 29, has been booked into the Pinellas County jail at least six times in the last decade, and her family has grown increasingly frustrated with her inability to keep herself out of trouble.
Well, at least the part of the family that still has anything to do with her.

Whitney Covington grew up a Scientologist. Her uncle is David Miscavige, the supreme leader of the Church of Scientology. And her mother, David’s twin sister Denise Gentile, disconnected from Whitney and her two young children several years ago.

“Disconnection” is a Scientology policy that has been getting a lot of attention lately. You may have read about a Las Vegas couple, Phil and Willie Jones, who recently paid for a billboard in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles, asking Scientologists to call the loved ones they’ve been forced to separate from. The billboard got massive press attention, and helped raise the public’s awareness that many Scientology families have been torn apart by David Miscavige and his insistence that church members cut off all ties from people that have left the organization — even if it means splitting apart parent and child.

What’s less well known is how disconnection has affected David Miscavige’s own family.

Scientology, disconnection, and the Miscavige family will be taking center stage on May 3 with the publication of a book by Whitney Covington’s grandfather, a man named Ron Miscavige. Written with former Church of Scientology member Dan Koon, Ron’s book is titled Ruthless: Scientology, My Son David Miscavige, and Me.

Ron will be talking to ABC’s Dan Harris as part of a full hour that 20/20 is dedicating to Scientology next Friday night, April 29. One of the things you’re likely to hear is that Ron decided to write his book specifically because of the way Scientology’s disconnection separated him from his daughters. We’ve learned about that from members of the family and close friends who have had to deal with the fallout of a dramatic series of events that have torn the Miscavige family apart.

One of the people seemingly spinning out of control in that wreckage is Whitney Covington, whose troubles with the law started while she was still in her teens. She was charged twice in 2006 after DUI arrests in March and April that year. She was only 19. Three times, in 2010 and twice in 2012, she was arrested and charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property. One of those incidents resulted in an 18-month prison stay.

We wanted to call Whitney Covington, but her most recent phone is turned off. She used another person’s phone to send a text to the part of the family that still talks to her. That’s her father, Robert Covington, and her stepmother, Heather Covington.

Just a week before this most recent arrest, Whitney asked to stay with her father and stepmother. Heather tells us she offered a deal: If Whitney took a drug test, they would pay to put her up in a three-month (non-Scientology affiliated) rehab program. Heather says she didn’t get a reply, and then she heard that Whitney had been arrested again.

“Whitney is homeless. Her own mother, Denise, disconnected from her because Scientology told her to,” Heather tells us. “I thought Denise disconnecting from her father was bad, but disconnecting from her own daughter is really low.”

In a series of conversations we’ve had with Heather and others, we’ve been able to piece together a picture of the chaos in the Miscavige family that serves as the background for Ron’s upcoming, and likely explosive, book.

Church of Scientology spied on father of Scientology leader David Miscavige

    Today, Tony Ortega posted this:

How Lisa Marie Presley became Scientology leader David Miscavige’s worst nightmare

For more than a year, the Underground Bunker has been speaking with sources close to Lisa Marie Presley who tell us that the daughter of Elvis Presley has not only turned against Scientology leader David Miscavige, but has taken steps to coordinate actions designed to cripple Miscavige’s rule.

Lisa Marie is using her media savvy and connections with other celebrities and other important figures inside Scientology to release explosive revelations about Miscavige, while keeping her own role quiet. The result, so far, has been the skillfully timed release of media stories that have damaged Miscavige at the same time that Scientology is in a long term decline.

In Lisa Marie Presley, David Miscavige has cultivated a powerful enemy. And in this story, we explain how things got to that point.

Something huge is about to go down with Scientology that could destroy the ‘church’ once and for all

A brewing power struggle between Lisa Marie Presley and Scientology leader David Miscavige could inflict crippling harm to the controversial “church.”

The only daughter of rock icon Elvis Presley has been slowly pulling herself away from Scientology, to which she was introduced as a child by her mother, since at least 2008, reported Tony Ortega.

Lisa Marie Presley Reportedly On A Mission To Destroy Scientology & You'll Never Guess Who She's Teaming Up With!

Another day, more odd Scientology drama — and this time, it involves ex-member Lisa Marie Presley.

According to Tony Ortega of The Underground Bunker, Elvis Presley's daughter has teamed up with Scientology leader David Miscavige's father Ron Miscavige for a full-on attack on the controversial church.

Ron is reportedly set to release a tell-all book entitled Ruthless: Scientology, My Son David Miscavige, and Me on May 3 in addition to appearing on a 20/20 special on April 29.

Another depressing piece of evidence that Scientology advocates splitting apart families

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, April 22, 2016

What a couple of days we’ve had here in the Underground Bunker, eh? On Wednesday, we took you into the disconnection problems that are splitting apart the most powerful family in Scientology, the Miscaviges. And then yesterday we revealed that those problems had pulled in Lisa Marie Presley, who has gone on the warpath against Scientology leader David Miscavige.

What she’s going to do next, we don’t know. But we surely do look forward to finding out. (Sorry to those readers who for some reason thought yesterday’s story promised a third installment. We have been told by our sources that Lisa Marie is planning more salvos against Miscavige, but we don’t yet know what they are.)

Naturally, stories this big kicked up some interesting conversations in the comments section yesterday (besides the terrible news of Prince’s death), and we wanted to single out one conversation for what we can learn from it.

Lori Hodgson, who has been profiled here numerous times, posted this message expressing her happiness over yesterday’s news:

Reading this article this morning put a big smile on my face! Thank you, Tony Ortega for sharing this with us. With all the recent news exposing more truth about Scientology and David Miscavige, I have much more hope that I will be back with my kids and all the other families reunited again.

And here’s another small piece of evidence about how the church encourages the splitting up of families.

A few of our readers noticed yesterday that a cutting comment aimed at Lori Hodgson showed up for a brief time.

You won’t, Lori. Every action I have seen you doing in the past years has further alienated your kids from you. I would think you know that but you do it anyway. But maybe you don’t see it. So I am telling you. You can’t force them to love you again.

Isn’t it heartwarming to know that someone at the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles is reading this website and telling Lori Hodgson to give up any hope of ever seeing her own children again?

    How spiritual.

Why Lisa Marie Presley’s custody battle likely has nothing to do with Scientology

By Tony Ortega, June 29, 2016

In April, we laid a bombshell on you: In 2014, Lisa Marie Presley attempted to have a showdown with Scientology leader David Miscavige, but he chickened out and sent his two sisters in his stead.

Presley was fed up after hearing all of the things Miscavige had been doing with “The Hole” — a prison for Scientology executives — and other allegations that had come out in the press in the last several years. But the final straw, our sources told us, was the way Miscavige was treating his own father, Ron.

When Lisa Marie tried to confront him about it in October 2014, Miscavige trotted out his sisters, Denise and Lori, who screamed at Presley about their father Ron and brother Ron Jr., apparently trying to justify their brother Dave’s behavior.

It backfired badly. Lisa Marie told her family that from that day, she was no longer a Scientologist (she had actually been pulling away from the church since at least 2008), and then she went on the warpath, taking key material from what would become Ron’s book Ruthless and feeding it secretly to the press for maximum damage.

We said in April that we had heard Lisa Marie was planning more headaches for David Miscavige in the future. But now, there’s a new surprise — she’s divorcing her husband of ten years, Michael Lockwood.

Lockwood was Lisa Marie’s musical director and a guitarist who played on her recordings. They had known each other well before it emerged in 2005 that they were dating. They were married in 2006.

Lockwood does have a few Scientology completions from that time, 2004-2007, but they are minor and reflect that he was doing those courses because he wanted to be a part of Lisa Marie’s life.

Our sources close to Lisa Marie tell us that Lockwood was not a Scientologist when Lisa Marie met him and he is not one now.

We think it’s presumptuous to assume that the divorce between them, or Lisa Marie’s attempt to get custody over their twin daughters, has anything to do with Scientology.

If we hear otherwise, we’ll report it. But for now, we think it’s probably not the case.

Tampa Bay Times on the targeting of Betsy Steg

By Tony Ortega, October 4, 2016

In April we told you about Betsy Steg, a Clearwater attorney who had become friends with former Scientology spokesman Mike Rinder, and who gave him use of her lovely home on the Intracoastal for his 2013 wedding to Christie Collbran.

As a result of that, a man named Robert Covington was instructed by Scientology that he could no longer do upkeep on the house for Steg. Covington was the ex-husband of Denise Covington, twin sister of Scientology’s leader, David Miscavige. Covington’s instructions to distance himself from Steg were one example of the evidence we presented that the Miscavige family itself was being torn apart.

Now, the Tampa Bay Times is reporting that retaliation against Steg has continued, and has resulted in her facing a fine of $46,500 from the city of Clearwater because she offered that Intracoastal home as a weekly rental, which is against the law.

Check out this well-reported story by Tracey McManus and Mark Puente, which illustrates how Scientology is so dogged in its retaliation schemes, and won’t hesitate to involve the city of Clearwater in its revenge schemes.

Illegal house rental nets Clearwater lawyer $46,000 fine; she blames attention from Scientology

By Tracey McManus and Mark Puente, Tampa Bay Times

The sun was about to set on a July evening in 2013 when Betsy Steg heard a knock at the door.

She peered out her front window and wondered how two uniformed Scientologists got the code to her gated cul-de-sac in Harbor Oaks, an affluent neighborhood overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.

As Steg opened the door, church official Peter Mansell delivered a warning.

"He said, 'You're an enemy of the church and we're going to harm and destroy you,' " Steg recalled.

Steg closed the door, her heart pounding. But the knock, she said, was a cue she had become the target of Scientology's well-known intimidation tactics used to punish former members, journalists, defectors and others who offend the church.

She began worrying every mishap was a veiled threat, including a stranger who inexplicably cut down privacy bushes last year in front of her guest house at 302 Cedar St.

For the past three years, a Scientologist who lives next door to that Cedar House complained to the city about the home being rented by the week in violation of Clearwater's short-term rental ban.

The city never verified the neighbor's allegations, but used her word to hand Steg the stiffest fine for short-term renting in Clearwater history: $46,500.

Steg admits she broke the law, but said her illicit business went undisturbed until she angered the wrong people.

In a statement to the Tampa Bay Times, church spokesman Ben Shaw said, "It appears that Ms. Steg's regret is not that she violated the city code for a decade, but rather that she was caught and that a concerned citizen whose personal faith happens to be Scientology acted responsibly in reporting the matter to the city."

The guy lives across town from 302 Cedar St. There's no way that he just happens to be passing by.

If there's no Scientology connection, they should check Arthur H. for connections to Mel Sembler and Drug Free America aka Straight, Inc. I'm sure they find ways to help each other.

Scientology kingpin and Tom Cruise best bud David Miscavige is tangled in an explosive and embarrassing hooker and drug scandal, has exclusively learned.

Whitney Covington, the 29-year-old niece of the feared cult boss, is accused of soliciting sex from a cop and she was busted after allegedly offering to perform a sex act on an undercover police officer in his car!

Covington, the daughter of Miscavige’s twin sister, reportedly climbed into the cop’s vehicle on April 15, asked to see his penis, “and kept asking to see it,” according to police in Clearwater, Fla. — the town that hosts the Scientology headquarters.

She then agreed to buy drugs, and drove with the officer to a local drugstore where she got out and met with a suspected dealer, say cops.

When she returned to the car, Covington told the officer to meet her around the corner in the store’s parking lot, where she was handcuffed and searched.

Police found “numerous syringes” containing a “brownish liquid” in her purse, along with metal spoons covered with burnt residue, the report said. She was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

This new image of David Miscavige makes years of Scientology Watching all worth it

By Tony Ortega, October 6, 2017

We want to thank a reader for sending us the latest Freewinds magazine, which contained the absolute gem you see here.

In the last couple of years, Scientology leader David Miscavige has been showing up more often in church publications looking like he’s sitting for a Vanity Fair photo spread. But this shot really takes the cake. It’s part of an issue of the magazine which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Sea Organization.

Yes, it was in 1967 that L. Ron Hubbard first assembled the force that would become the hardcore inner elite of Scientology, and to mark the occasion, Miscavige went down into the engine room of the Freewinds to pose for this hunky snap.

(We can practically hear all of those former Sea Org members who spent unhappy hours cleaning the Freewinds engine room as punishment throwing up a little in their mouths about now.)

And yes, note the wedding ring, prominently displayed, for his poor bride Shelly, who for 12 years he’s kept out of sight at a small Scientology compound in the mountains above Los Angeles.

Other crew members were similarly posed for dramatic shots. Doesn’t life at sea look fun?
