Cult Dry Cleaning? Harpoons?

Co$ wants to open a dry cleaning place in the neighborhood of the complex (4834 Fountain Avenue, on the south side of Fountain near Catalina). Here's a link to the notice about it:

    http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x475/johnsmith41/Pollution.jpg

Dry cleaning establishments emit VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are air pollutants. There's already a dry cleaning place right there, a couple of doors west of Catalina (Fernando de Manila, 4849 Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029 323-664-8886 on the north side of Fountain), so does the neighborhood really need another one?

As the notice states, written comments should be submitted to

    Jackson Yoong
    Office of Engineering and Compliance
South Coast Air Quality Management District
    21865 Copley Drive
    Diamond Bar, CA 91765-4182.
    (His phone number is 909-396-3125.)

Also, the angle of whether or not the neighborhood really needs another drycleaner could be worked with the L.A. city and county planning departments. I've looked up the contact information for them too:

    Mary Richardson
    Community Planner for Hollywood
    200 N. Spring Street
    Los Angeles, CA 90012
    mary.richardson@lacity.org
    213-978-1478

(The county planning department does the land use planning for the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. So they wouldn't be the ones directly involved in the goings-on in Hollywood.)

As the notice states, at this point it's a proposed permit. That is, it hasn't been issued yet. "Information regarding the facility owner's compliance history" has been submitted. I wonder if that information included their history of asbestos pollution on the Freewinds, or their waste dumping in the pristine Caribbean waters near Bonaire. Hmm? Mr. Yoong might be interested to know about that aspect of the owner's "compliance" history.

Whether the issuance of the permit can be stopped or not isn't really the main point here though. The point is, "organized" scientology needs to know they can no longer fly under the radar. Every move they make is going to be scrutinized. Stopping the permit would just be icing on the cake.

Comments have to be received within 30 days of the date of the notice (which was June 14th), so 'poon at will!

    Love and kisses,

Your information is inaccurate. The cult wants to install dry cleaning equipment in one of their long-owned warehouses on Fountain Avenue. The old, rundown, one-story building painted in Sea Org blue has oft been used as a warehouse... years ago, it was used as a holding pen and sleep area for the PAC-RPF.

It is not for a public dry cleaning store, but an internal operation.

...They would use the RPF to do the dry cleaning, that's for sure!

    RPF DRY CLEANING SERVICE
WE WILL LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES AND WALLETS TOTALLY CLEAR!

    edit: Oh,is internal?
    RPF slave work then.

The notice mentions 11lbs per day of "Volatile Organic Compounds" being released into the air by this operation, and says that meets current requirements, but doesn't mention what the VOCs are. Is there any way to find out if these machines will be the older style which use perchloroethylene (PERC)??

It would seem strange if installing PERC machines is approved, since PERC has been banned in California, and all current PERC based dry cleaners have until 2023 to get converted to another method. The EPA even approved of California's PERC ban:

Anyone want to make any bets on whether Cof$ will provide required safety equipment to the folks working at this plant if it does get approved??

The location may have been incorrect in the OP but the argument against the Scientology's corporation track record on environmental hazards still stands.
    Poon away.

Looks like it is right next to an apartment:

If the AQMD has said their equipment meets requirements, the other issue is how safe they will keep their own "religious workers" and their neighbors.

    meh!
they have been taking people to the cleaners for years

Not to mention, it would take away another excuse for Sea Org members to leave the confines of the Complex. They've probably had some people slip away under the guise of taking their uniforms to the cleaners. So I think they're probably planning on doing the drycleaning internally for some such reason.

Are you saying they lied about where the dry cleaning equipment is going to be?

It's one block away from the apartment complex.. directly across the street from the old, pink Bridge Publications Building.

If you Google Map "4734 Fountain Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029", it'll show you the side of the building that faces New Hampshire Street... blue building with a fence & familiar tarp wrapped around it.

Click on the L arrow and the photo will move N to Fountain Avenue and you'll get a wide photo of the building. To the E is the wall of a building advertising storage space.

Info is from someone who has had a business for over 20 years, within a block from big blue, and was on staff there. I'd have no reason to doubt it. Not exactly like the wandering vagabond of Erronia.

Whatev. If the info provided to you is that it's going to be a retail dry cleaning store, the info is wrong.
  18. Anonymous Member

Where does it say "retail dry cleaning store"?
  19. Anonymous Member

Yeah, Smurf. I think "retail dry cleaning store" was an interpretation on your part.
  20. Smurf Member

I made the assumption based on this.. "Co$ wants to open a dry cleaning place in the neighborhood of the complex".. if my assumption was wrong... my apologies.

    No problem.

Wait. What if it is a commercial establishment and we let them get away with opening another cult-owned operation that turns out to be a source of pollution on a grand scale. Considering their solid background of polluting (remember the Failwinds asbestos ship/Bonaire polluter) and of lying on documents too numerous to mention, and topping it off with the force of various policies that give them free rein to disregard all laws for their "Greater Good," I discourage them from starting this establishment.

I wonder what he thinks about the cult taking away all his dry cleaning customers. That's where the Sea Organisms have been going up to now.

Time to PA the local NIMBYs?
  27. Mark Cabian Member

    huh?
  28. Smurf Member

It's an opportunity to further isolate SOs from doing business with wogs. Much cheaper, too. Have the RPF'ers do all the dry cleaning for staff.
  29. Smurf Member

I whatev'd you 2 days ago. Catch up, dude. :)

But seriously, even if it is just for their own "internal" dry cleaning, bear in mind that this is a multi-national corporation. I can see them shipping in their dirty laundry (of which they have plenty) from all over the world. What kind of pollution would they be producing then?

Flag has had a license to do their own internal dry cleaning for many, many years in Clearwater. This is old news. Yes, VOCs are taken into account by the local government. No, the VOCs emitted by Flag dry cleaning are no different than any other established, legitimate dry cleaning business.

Sorry, since Google deleted their "Uncle Sam" sandbox, I can't point you anymore to dox that support this, it's now buried in the bazillion scientology links online.
  33. BigBeard Member

This is in LA, not Clearwater, where I suspect VOCs are much more tightly controlled.

Apologies, I screwed up. (yup, I'm an idiot again)

I don't know anything about the LA scilon dry cleaning.
  35. Anonymous Member

    I know that.
  36. Saul Goodman Member

    Why, you little.
  37. Anonymous Member

So what does PA mean? I get that it has something to do with people who are local to the area being discussed, maybe to get them involved somehow? How do we do that?
  38. Anonymous Member

Oh they do, do they? With the kind of record they've got, the fact that they want to is reason enough to stop them. Do it!
