I guessed that the militia were part of "Unite the Right" but apparently they went to Charlottesville to keep the peace between the Nazis and the counter protesters. Still, I remember them hanging out with the Bundys, who are far-right and really annoying. So I give them one point but that's not quite enough to remove my mistrust.

This is what I thought from the beginning, and I'm really no friend of Trump. There were actually three groups: Neo-Nazis, Counter-protesters and Antifa. If you have Antifa and Neo-Nazis without police between them, there will always be violence. Reading around, one article described how police tried to separate them by different routes / areas for marching / gathering. I found no detailed info, but from what I know about Antifa(nts), they would use the route they want just like the Neo-Nazis. And both make sure these routes will cross.

Eye witnesses said, Antifa protected them. Good thing, but what do you expect from Neo-Nazis if you block their way they are allowed to use? Of course they are not allowed to kill you then - but free speech is for all, be it Neo-Nazi assholes or President chatterboxes.
The only part Uber-Chatterbox is wrong or was not detailed enough: Don't compare peaceful Counter-Protesters with Neo-Nazis.

Anti-fa are doing protesting wrong. You can't fight crime by behaving like a criminal. Yes it is important to defend yourself but your first duty is to get the hell away from your attacker if at all possible.

Vigilante justice is great in movies but in real life it causes a breakdown of civil order. People who have lived through violent social chaos have a hard time re-building a normal level of trust in other people. Shit can stay fucked up for generations. This is why "let the courts decide" is the way to go, even if the courts fuck up.

Imagine 2008 if Anti-fa had been involved in the Scientology protests. No lulz, no cake, and good people branded as "extremists."

But how do we convince Anti-fa that physical violence is a footbullet and not a strategy? I think most of the people joining Anti-fa events are well meaning, just misguided.

Imagine if Scientology protesters broke windows at Ideal Orgs, or responded to bullbaiting with fists. Chanology would have accomplished nothing.

If the Nazis who marched through Charlottesville do not support the genocide of the Jews, communists, socialists, democrats, homosexuals, slavs, JWs... they need to renounce their insane beliefs and stop wrapping themselves in the Swastika.

Otherwise, no-one is safe, and certainly not the Nazis themselves. There are just too many people still around who have sworn never to forget, nor to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Dis, I can personally sympathise with both your position and TI's.

Murderous Nazis are a special case. They seek out violence as a means of self-expression. That has been and still is apparently their only ideology.

I would like to know why anyone was allowed on the protest (on any side, or on no side) who had any kind of weapon, whether it was guns, or armour, or sticks, shields or torches, or whatever. It should have been a prerequisite for granting permits that the proper authorities could verify in advance, with sufficient resources to arrest anyone who did not comply.

It goes without saying that the Nazis could never agree. Without all the military hardware, they'd be on an equal footing with, and indistinguishable from the untermenschen they seek to intimidate (ie everyone else).

But it seems that neither the local authorities, the judges, even the US Constitution, can enforce such a rule.

Not that it would have saved poor Heather Heyer.

I found a livestream that has a lot of details about the sequence of events. The cameraman flips from selfie to crowd view but I don't believe there are any edits. He starts walking from the corner of 1st and Water St toward 5th St. You see a thin crowd at 4th and Water as he passes. There's a glimpse of Field's Charger headed east on Water. No damage to the vehicle is visible.

Camera guy turns up 5th and pauses on the mall. He doesn't see the events on 4th until Fields has backed away. But there is continuous coverage of the crowd around Heather, including the start and end of CPR. You can't see much because 4th st is crowded.

After Fields backed up 4th St like a bat out of hell he turned east on Market St. This vid was taken from a position a little west of the police station. People cheer as they see a car dragging its bumper because they don't know what has just happened.

At all protests I attended in the last years, Antifa was the main problem for me. They destroy the "peaceful" argument and the police knowing that, sometimes sends undercover guys to provoke violence. Not in cases where Leftists and Rightists clash but where people protest against "the system". Since police makes itself a tool of it, I sometimes can understand Antifa. On average, politicians are corrupt, corruption is done with money, big money is with big capitalists. Hard to change w/o violence, but for me anything else is not an option - fan of Jesus- and Gandhi-Tech.

How to deal with Neo-Nazis then?
Massive police forces instead of letting Antifa do the job and letting them make heroes of themselves. Prevent any deviation from allowed routes and gatherings for _both_ sides. No weapons allowed.

I know that protesters between "peaceful" and Antifa say we cannot let Neo-Nazis walk. Why? How many by-standers would march with them? What does blocking their way help? You fuel their argument of suppression. And formally they are correct.
Do you really want to say, Neo-Nazis are so special, are deviant human beings so we have the right to decide which laws are valid for them? Wait a moment ...

I say: Let them walk! But not un-seen. Not without sueing the shit out of them for every iota they cross the law. For every human being they harm.

To sanction hate speech directed to another person, e.g. death threats is a good thing imo.

What I do not understand is that in some countries carrying weapons for private people is allowed. That's indeed a way of communication, to me more like hate speech.

In Charlottesville I saw Anti-fa hitting someone with a big stick, an elderly Nazi who'd fallen on the street. The guy hitting the old man hadn't been attacked by him. Violence toward helpless old people will scare the shit out of your parents and grandparents. But it won't scare white supremacists who often have done hard time in prison.

I wish the journalist in this piece below would criticize the claim that "violence works." That's some bullshit propaganda communists liked to use back in the day. Ordinary citizens fucking hate violence and the people who do it.

Guns are a problem in the US. It's on my list of things to deal with eventually.

Addressing cops, Cantwell said, “I'm armed. I do not want violence with you, alright?" He added, “I'm terrified. I'm afraid you're going to kill me I really am." Cantwell also claimed, “We are trying to be law-abiding. And our enemies will not stop. What options do we have left?"

Cantwell, a Keene, New Hampshire resident, went to Charlottesville with multiple handguns. But he is wanted in connection with his alleged use of pepper spray. The warrants charge him with illegal use of gases and injury by caustic agent or explosive.

Days before his blubbering began, Cantwell made racist and anti-Semitic comments to a Vice film crew. After the rally, Cantwell declared that the death of Heather Heyer was “justified.” Heyer, 32, was killed when white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters.
