Campaign to close down Iranian embassies worldwide

Discussion in 'Protest Advice' started by Unregistered, Jul 23, 2009.

  1. This would be the job of the UN, but unfortunately we all know that those beaurocrats can't pull off anything like this. If only someone could pursuade those in charge in civilized countries to take action against these barbaric abuses...
  2. Canada already doesn't have an embassy in Iran.

  4. We have a small office in a building in Tehran with a lot of other companies. That office houses a charge d'affaires, but not an ambassador. Oh geez, I can't remember when we withdrew our ambassador. Might have been after the torture and murder of our journalist Kazemi.

I am of a divided mind about closing the embassies. Embassies allow for some useful services to take place:

    1) Intelligence gathering.
    2) Negotiations, international pressure.
    3) Rescue of citizens, prisoners.

I support the other proposals that people have put forward for civil disobedience. But I oppose the closing of the embassies. Nevertheless I think that the OP is a good post and talking this through is a good idea.

I agree on closing emb. is contraproductive. Emb. will be needed to keep up diplomatic dialoque. If that is cut off escalation gets a higher chance.
