There are many parts to the Headley story, some parts more exciting than others. We weren't as intrigued about Headley's subsequent lawsuit, for example, as the News is. Headley told us that after working for 16 years for Scientology for almost no pay, he was suing the organization in federal court for violating minimum wage laws.

Well, we can see why the Anonymous folks and other critics might get excited by such a lawsuit -- they get excited by anything critical of Scientology. But really, when former hard-core members of wacky religious orders start suing over pay and conditions, it makes you wonder what they thought they were getting into to begin with.

Still, despite missing these key points in the Headley saga, the News piece had plenty of other good stuff, and it's another sign that the mainstream media is finally picking up the drumbeat from Anonymous, Mark Bunker, Andreas Heldal-Lund, and so many others who have worked for years at getting word out about Hubbard's wacky cabal.

There is no reason a comma can't be used after the introductory clause in that sentence.

The Sea Org: Scientology's American Al Qaeda

Stories of the Sea Org make it appear to be a para-military organization. Their facility in San Jacinto, California holds more than 500 members. All of whom have signed a "billion year contract", effectively meaning that the individual is a permanent, indentured, volunteer of the Sea Org for all their many reincarnated life times. Rich white guys in the south in the 1700s might have called this "indentured servitude". The rest of us called it slavery. Fuck that.

While Scientology is scary, and clearly I'm not the only one that thinks so, its Sea Org is far more frightening. It is the cult of cults. It is the pinnacle of weird brainwashery in Scientology. As the AP article describes, the Sea Org was started in 1967 by L. Ron Hubbard to acquire poorly captained ships and take his most dedicated followers around the world to spread the teachings of CoS. They wear maritime uniforms, carry swords, and are rumored to have an arsenal of weaponry which include tanks. This is some serious shit. This is government sanctioned, batshit crazy terrorist style worship, complete with firepower and rigid militaristic leadership.

I don't find too many differences between Scientology's Sea Org and radical Islam's Al Qaeda. They both offer education, housing, and religious sanctity for those who are desperate, young, and emotionally distraught. Neither care for the lives of their members, rather, they are interested in perpetuating the social power and fear-mongering skills of their leaders. They desire to spread the word of their cause no matter the cost and use the leniency of their governments to do so. Both the Sea Org and Al Qaeda act as paramilitary organizations.

Is it me, or did they pare down Marc Headley's escape rather considerably in the original AP story?

He claims he fled on a motorbike with $200, two days' worth of clothes and a cell phone. Security gave chase, but when Headley crashed his bike in a ditch a passer-by called 911 and sheriff's deputies arrived, he said. He thinks the officers scared off his pursuers and prevented his recapture.

I thought it was that security ran him off the road, and that one guy didn't stop following Marc afterward until the police ordered him not to.

I mean, it's not incorrect, but it's as if someone at AP with no balls chopped out a lot of CoS's creepiness. AP is already legal covered by the "He claims" part, so I don't see the point until there was a very tight word limit.

the quote in the above article about the Tanks is quite a stretch.ruins an otherwise fine article...tanks would stick out like a sore thumb on gold base..I think the local natives would have spotted those...

It's more than tanks. SO doesn't carry swords. Comparisons to Al Quada and Nazi's or generic terrorists is what Sci does!

Extremist misinformation backfires. Mass genocide is Not what Sci does. Now personally I know the Sci's massive destruction is indeed massive and much more incipid and torturous. There's no reason to make stuff up and it only fuels sci's counterpoint.

I asked John Duignan if the sea org had any training with swords, after the "Epic Swords Guy" incident last year. He told me that he had been trained to use knives in self defense, but had never seen anyone carrying actual swords.

Maybe that's where they got confused.
