A vascular illness in which the blood vessels are inflamed, Kawasaki Syndrome occurs almost exclusively in infants and toddlers, Robert Baltimore, a professor in pediatrics at Yale University's school of medicine, told AFP.

Symptoms include prolonged fever, often a rash, red lips and tongue, and sometimes arthritis and behavioral changes, said Baltimore, who is a specialist in Kawasaki Syndrome.

But the illness, the cause of which is not known, does not usually result in seizures, does not continue for many years, and rarely recurs, Baltimore said.

Treatments that US media reported have been given to Jett Travolta "are not part of what I would call conventional treatment for Kawasaki disease," he added.

No information was available about what form of treatment Jett Travolta received when he was diagnosed with Kawasaki Syndrome or for his seizures.
